Hi,
I currently work for Amity. My current contract ends in September, but my Gaijin card and passport seem to indicate visa expiration in August. Assuming I complete my current contract with no extension, is it safe to say that they will have to extend my visa another year to keep me on?
Thanks,
P

If you are scheduled to work until the "ent" of September, and your visa expires in August, you will have to renew your visa. Whatever you do at the "ent" of September is up to you. |

As Wayne, above, points out, you must renew your visa whether you renew your contract or not. If you don't you will be working illegally. |

I understand. I suppose, I'm just trying to nail down that they must sponsor another year's visa for me even if I only work for them a few weeks after it commences. |

Show them your passport and your contract at the same time and ask them how they think you'll be able to work without the correct visa.
By the way, when you get a visa extension you may get one year or you may get three depending on the apparent whims of immigration. |

Speaking from personal experience, I'm positive that Amity (AEON) will sponsor you for another year. I worked for AEON during 2005 and 2006. My contract was up a couple of months after my visa expiration. Not only did I have to renew my visa for another year, but AEON sponsored it. |

Thanks for the clarification. I'm a bit more confident about my situation now. For a while there, I was afraid I'd have to extend my contract to get visa renewal. As it stands, I'll just move on to greener pastures.
I wonder if there's anything I can do to encourage immigration towards the 3-year visa. I was actually under the impression that they ceased to be offered when the US got uptight about their visas. |

You can't do anything. You get what you get. Some people get a one year visa and some people get a three year visa. |

People are still getting 3 year visas, same as before. With a Humanities visa I doubt whether your nationality has much effect on the length of the visa you are given. America tightening up visa regulations wouldn't have a global effect on visas for other nationalities anyway. |
