anyone know how to say this in Japanese, or even if they exist?

Basically, I've written a short story which I'm trying to send to a magazine in America. I have to send a stamped addressed envelope for their reply. In England, when you send such things overseas you simply enclose whats called an 'international reply coupon' which you buy at the post office.

I tried to purchase the Japanese version tonight, to no avail. I couldn't find it in the dictionary and don't have a phrasebook at the moment. My Japanese speaking friend didn't know, and the staff didn't understand the work 'kakedome' which my girlfriend gave me.

Any hope would be much appreciated.

I think the word you got from your girlfriend is 'kakitome' (書留). It means 'registered mail'. It usually requires the recipient to sign for it. I don't know if this helps you, but here it is.

They used to exist, but I can't for the life of me remember what the name of them is. Try wading through here or contacting someone http://www.post.japanpost.jp/english/contactus.html or go through the Japanese side of the site.

The Japanese term is this: 国際返信券 (kokusai henshinken). However, just saying this may not be enough to get the darn things (the one time I asked for an IRC, in a very small town called Tamura-cho, there was initial shock, followed by the lady at the front desk telling me mine was the first request there...ever. Shocked ). While you're probably (I hope) in a larger town, just in case, use something like this Japanese in a pinch if you need to explain: 国際間で返信をもらう時、封書に同封するクーポン券で、返信切手の代用として、郵便局で扱うもの (Kokusaikan de henshin o morau toki, fuusho ni doufuu suru ku-ponken de, henshin kitte no daiyou to sh ite, yuubinkyoku de atsukau mono.)

"Sh ite" is actually one word--just spelled this way here to avoid getting bleeped.

Hope this helps!
