So what happens if you sign a one-year contract, find a much better job three or six months later, and break it?

Can the old company have your visa revoked? Can the new company provide a new one?

Thanks,

Your visa is tied to your work permit, which is tied to your job, so if you quit your job your visa will either be cancelled or transferred to your new job, depending on one of two scenarios:

If you give proper notice, and follow the regulations, you should have enough time to transfer over to your new job without any visa trouble. (Assuming that your old school is reasonable).

If you act like a jerk and just up and quit , your school will work as fast as they can to cancel your visa and notify immigration, in the hopes of getting you deported and blacklisted.

Yes, I wouldn't want to be a jerk about it at all, and I would never leave any school flat that honored their end of the contract.

I was just thinking in the case of working for a company that wasn't keeping its promises or getting an offer that one couldn't refuse- what the legal consequences would be. Otherwise, I am loyal and dedicated, and am willing to go the extra mile too.

Boy, things sure are easy here visa wise in Fukuoka. Too bad you can barely make a living though. Just breathing costs a hundred yen a minute I think.

The most important thing in leaving any position is to give an appropriate amount of notice i.e. at least one month. Do it in writing and be able to prove when you handed the notice in. Email can be a good way to show this.

Schools are required to notify the CLA if you leave their employ and if the school mentions that you left without notice then you may be automatically blacklisted.

Aside from that you can leave a job at any time and for any reason with notice no matter what the school may say on the matter. If you have agreed to a breach penalty then you should expect that this will be taken by the school, but if you work with the school in helping to find and/or train your replacement then you may be able to avoid any pre-agreed upon penalty.

Thanks Clark. That sounds reasonable to me.
