|

Hi all, and thanks to Iliria for the thoughtful response!
I do realize that cynicism is not particular to Italy in the world of ESL, so if this post appears misplaced please forgive a "newbie"'s digression.
I've been saddenned by reading so many posts at this and other related websites that suggest that for many in the field, the experience, rather than a sunny, curious exercise in teaching, teaching-lite, a skip through the global park has rather been a grand disillusionment
The total experience for many posters seems, in the balance, to be painful.
Dissenters?
I should add that, as a woman of 44 who's worked a
number of different jobs,( which have jaded me similarly), and is now hoping for a little psychic cigarette break, Im saddenned to read so much sadness in the annals of what I hoped would be something of a rest-point.
Grazie, yall!

Jaded and cynical I may be after six years - about dodgy recruiters, scam artists, inept management, broken promises, idiot colleagues and c.rap pay. Disillusioned with teaching, no. Out of love with Italy, no. And when I stop enjoying it, I'll stop doing it.
Welcome to the Teaching-Lite (TM) Global EFL Theme Park. Enjoy your stay. |

Teaching like so many other jobs has its ups and downs but right now I'm just not ready to swap it for a humdrum accountancy job staring at pointless figures all day. For sure the pay is crap but I've seen and experienced things through a natives eyes that I would never have done as a tourist as well as the fact that I feel like I've made a positive difference to many peoples lives through giving them English skills that will allow them to have more rewarding trips and better jobs. Most importantly I've loved and lost and loved again - there's no way I'd have been able to develop and sustain my current relationship without being able to earn a local liveable wage here. |

Hi dsherter and everyone else!
Jaded and cynical? No way!!! I have just got back from a year of teaching English in Japan, and the job was so cruisy!!! It was DEFINITELY like taking a coffee break from my career! So much so that I want to keep taking coffee breaks!!(so to speak)
I realised how great life is when you take away job stress. It felt like being a Uni student again...(.minus the study, stress and poverty!!)
Also, getting to know so many lovely students was wonderful...and Im still in touch by email with some of them.
Well, I hope you enjoy living abroad dsherter, and have FUN with your new job.

What a great note! Its really nice to know that for some the whole trip is a "trip" and not so much a slog.
Congrats on having kept it all light happy and cruisy!

A walk in the park can become a bad dream
People are staring and following me
This is my only escape from it all
Watching a film or a face on the wall
Robert De Niro's waiting, talking Italian...
Sorry, since reading marita's post I've had that song going round and round in my head! Very apt lyrics as it happens... |
