Last April, I had a new Visa issued when I signed up with a public school dispatch company in Osaka. I did this job for a few months before deciding it wasn't quite for me, gave appropriate notice and then sat back for a couple of months before leaving Japan. I didn't hand in my ARC at Immigration. My visa expires this coming May. Since last November I've been working in Seoul and starting a new job in a month. I have to do a visa run to Japan (and I'd prefer going to Japan for this in order to catch up with friends). At Immigration, should I stand in the ARC/resident queue and give my address as stated on my ARC or enter as a tourist?

Enter as a tourist. There's no reason not to.

If you left Japan without buying a reentry permit, your alien card and visa are invalidated upon your return. Therefore, you are a tourist.

Just enter in the normal Japanese queue with the re-entry people. they wont look at the rest of your passport. I left for a while and came back at the end of a three year visa and they didn't say anything, which ofcourse they shouldn't have done anyway. I was entering the country legaly on a legal visa and re-entry permit. The re-entry permits are three years long so there's nothing they can do about it.

No, re-entry permits are either single or multiple and the multiple re-entry permits are valid until the end of your visa term. If your visa is only valid for one year then that is the maximum length your multiple re-entry permit is valid for.

If you have a valid visa and alien card and your re-entry visa hasn't been used (in the case of a single) or is a multiple one then you can come back via the residents' queue.

If you have a re-entry permit then you should also have filled in a re-entry slip that should be in your passport. Having this will make it much easier to get back in without having to stand in the tourists' queue.

Oh yes, I just made the wrong assumption that the peron's visa in question was for three years because mine is.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! Just looked at my passport, my ne year visa expires on the 4th of May, I have a multi re-entry permit expiring same date and I have a diembarkation card stapled in. So I'll just enter as a resident.
