I am about to start in a company that uses NLP in English classes. I wonder if anyone can share their experiences of this.

I guess we all use it at times, in games and other activities, but if anyone has worked with NLP as the principle behind the teaching, I would be interested to hear their comments.

Phil, as I understand NLP it uses all of the dominant preferences of learning including visual, speaking, listening, hearing and touching (not the formal NLP terms). I have been using all these for three years.

Changing activities is important every 17 minutes because of the average attention span of adults. With television, this has changed to as few as 6 minutes with children and even less with hyperactive students. When I change activities I change the NLP. For example, a video activity followed by practice with a ball, followed by listening, followed by a visual explanation on the board, followed by student conversation etc.

Many English classes here in Mexico are very boring when the teacher just lectures for 50 minutes at a time. Is this what you are talking about?

Phil,

I wouldn't say that NLP is the primary principle behind my teaching, I don't work in the right context for that to happen, but I do think it has shapped me as a teacher. Just in case you are not already aware of it, I thought I'd point you to Humanizing Language Teaching an e-zine that is based on NLP.
