|
|
I'll try to keep this simple.
When I got my tax statement from my ex-employer they had drastically under-reported my earnings (and the tax I'd paid).
Since I'd been in the country the required 183 days I should have received a refund. (I still will but it'll be less.)
The school only took out 10% for tax, not 20% so the difference to me is not all that much. Well, it is, but probably not enough to pay for the hours of hassle needed to get it fixed.
My question is this: if I just use the form they gave me to file is there any way it can come back to bite me later on?
Thanks,

There shouldn't be any problems, as this is how a lot of schools do things. The tax office might have a few questions for you though. Most people just say they didn't work that much!
Another question for you is did your employer remit the same amount that he deducted from your paychecks over the year? If he didn't remit all of it, he should give the balance back to you. Some bosses use this as a sneaky way of collecting a little extra money (or paying a teacher's bonus), as most teachers don't understand the tax system and don't bother trying to figure it out. |

Ha! They'll gain almost almost exactly the same amount I'll lose.
They only reported about 20% of what I earned. They didn't know I'd be in the lower tax bracket so they probably thought we'd both be ahead.
Oddly enough (geek that I am) I checked every paycheck and advance against my own figures and found errors every month, usually in their favor. But that should have given them a clue that I'd be able to figure out the tax system.
I'll give them a call and ask for a corrected form. See what the reply is.
Thanks for answer,

Considering the abuse school owners have gotten in a couple of recent posts, I feel compelled to provide a followup to my original post.
I was wrong.
My ex-employer was not out to screw me.
I was counting December's pay (paid in Jan) in the figures. The school was not.
It was yet another case of a foreign teacher coming to Taiwan and expecting to find things like they were at home.
