Sorry if this has been brought up before, but after doing some searches I couldn't find a conclusive answer to my problem.

Here is my situation.

I currently have a full time job, but I have been offered a part time job which I intend to take.
The problem is that my three year visa expires at the end of May, but my new job begins in the first week of April. My friend informed me that I might have severe problems renewing my visa and that it isn't possible to change my status from full time to part time.

I was wondering if the good folk reading this forum could shed some light on this and offer me some advice?

Any help would be appreciated.

It's up to immigration to accept your new job as sufficient to support yourself in Japan. Even if your new job says they can sponsor your visa, it is still up to immigration. Most people that renew their visa without a full-time position have a few part-time positions that immigration deems acceptable, meaning that they think you have a sufficient amount of income coming in to support yourself if Japan. It has nothing to do with part-time or full-time. It has to do with monthly income.

My suggest is to find another part-time job in addition to the job you are applying for, and do it quickly, or stay at your current job. Staying at your current job seems to be the safest option.

Even though you're accepting the part-time job, will you be remaining at your full-time job?

As Canuck says, it's based on your income. I think the minimum is around 220,000 yen per month guaranteed income. None of the paperwork I put in for my visa extensions stated how many hours I worked, but my income was specified.

If that part-time job is your sole income and it will be less than 220,000 per month, then Immigration quite likely won't be happy with the situation.

Are your employers at your new job happy to put together all the paperwork you need for an extension with change of employer? Quite a few documents are necessary.

Go to immigration and ask them. That`s what I do generally when I`m going to change jobs.

Bring as much info as you have about the new job, and they`ll give you an idea of whether or not it will be enough.

They never say for sure, but they`ve always been good when I ask questions like that.

And be careful when you leave your job now, to get a termination letter, since immigration will likely need that.

Good Luck.
