Hi, everyone. I am looking for a first-time ESL job somewhere in the Middle East. If possible, I would like to teach medical ESP.

I am a 52-yr-old Texan woman with a B.A. in political science from Amherst College. I worked as a paramedic for 8 years, and for the last 4+ years have been working as a medical transcriptionist. My medical-ese skills are truly excellent. I also have four years of experience working as a substitute teacher at the public secondary school here. I will start CELTA certification beginning in a few weeks. Also found a summer job teaching English for an Austin language school, so will shortly have some experience.

I lived in Kuwait/Lebanon in the 70s for a couple of years and loved it (I did get to travel, though... worked for Kuwait Airways.)

Can someone please tell me about the feasibility of coming back to teach medical ESP, or plain old English? Where should I look for a job? I own a home, a retirement account, etc., ongoing financial obligations in the US, so cannot work for peanuts.

Also, there is a firm in Oman (apparently) called MBS (Mena Business Services) which hires medical English trainers. Worth applying to?

Look on the Higher Colleges of Technology recruitment site. Dubai Women's College trains paramedics, female and male.

Try the Kuwait University Faculty of Medicine / Health Sciences Center. They had an ad on here about a month back. You should be able to find it.

Yes, but they require an MA at KU. And they are very strict about it.

Hey Afra, does HCT teach medical transcription?

As far as I know they are only training paramedics who, as you probably remember, are currently all ex-pats.

Still? I would hope that there would be some locals moving into the program by now. Not surprising though. Their affluence does allow them to avoid these culturally loaded occupations.

DWC is training local women and men as paramedics.

Do tell us what you mean by 'culturally loaded occupations'.

Call it what you will. What do you think it means? Which nationalities tend to sweep the streets and collect garbage? Which generally serve in cafes and restaurants? Which currently occupy positions as drivers and housemaids in SA? etc. etc.

OK Scot... I'll give you an example. When I was first teaching at SQU in science foundations English, I had what for me was an enlightening conversation with one of the young women who sat in the back row of my class. She was very depressed that she had not scored high enough on the thanniwiya amma to get into the medical track to become a doctor. So, I suggested that she might consider becoming a nurse. With shock and disgust, she pointed out that this was completely unacceptable because her family would NEVER allow her to do that... nurses wore trousers!!! they worked with both sexes!! I suggested that doctors may do the same. But... apparently her idea was that she would only be a doctor for women and children. She was not aware of how the medical training actually worked and that it was not as sexually segregated as she was assuming.

So, you have a number of things going on... there is the class issue where 'doctors' are important, but the rest of the medical personnel tend to be Filipinos, Indians, or Egyptians - more of a servant status. And you have the sexual segregation issue where many families do not want their women involved in training that involves working with the semi-clothed human body.

Afra...

thanks for the info, I mis-read your first post, so it is good to know that the strictures are slowly breaking down in the UAE too... as I know that Oman is getting more locals into all the medical fields now.

So... you want me to say that it isn't culturally loaded? Or do you just want to disagree just to disagree? Laughing
