What term, Van, would you use to describe a character that is incapable of understanding -
(i) you actually have to pay to do an MA
(ii) you will have to support yourself while doing so and
(iii) to make your MA profitable you need to get a job with $'x' savings for 'y' number of years.
That type of maths is regularly calculated by 6 year olds. Any adult that can't manage it is not playing with a full deck.
It's not much more difficult than understanding that when you take something off the supermarket shelf and put it in your trolley, you will eventually have to give some money (called a payment) to a cashier sat behind an electronic box (a till) which is full of not sweets but money.
We're not talking spending habits here. Just elementary maths. |

Yes, but what if your only passport is a USAnian one, which I assume to be the case for the OP? |

Speaking of which, is there a cheaper country to get an M.A.? (studying in English of course.) In particular, is it possible to live in England for 6 months while working a low level job just to scrape by, and then be eligible for residency status and a cheap AND good Master's degree?
I am definitely one of the savers. After I got out of high school I lived overseas until I was 21 so that my parents income would not be taken into account. As a result, I got a very cheap education. |
US citizens who want to work in UK need to apply for a work permit. Work permits are specific to an employer, so a new one is required for each new employer.
Which means, any US citizen, who wants to study in a UK university needs to pay full-time postgraduate international student fees, which is around 8000 /year (equivalent of $15740).
If you stay longer than 3 months in the UK, then you need a visa.
You may contact the British Embassy in DC for details, or the following link:

| Can we have a source for your claim work permits are tied to the employer. They are talking about reintroducing this restriction for domestic servants, but what other types of visas does it apply to? |

| I do take issue with VS's vicious attack on the illustrious CLUB300. Correct me if I'm wrong VS, but I doubt you ever attended one meeting during your time in the Middle East. If you had I've no doubt you would've been won over. You would've been singing "Halala u akhbar" or "Halleluja halala" with the rest of us. |
You are, of course, correct that I have never attended one meeting, but only because I was never invited... a fact that has haunted me ever since...

There are a number of Immigration categories in the UK that are collectively known as work permits.
UK work permit applications can only ever be made (or signed) by a UK employer.
UK employers should be able to recruit from overseas where and if it is not possible for them to recruit a suitable resident worker.

| We are not talking about why for most categories of work permits you need a job beforehand (though not for skilled migrant, working holiday, or student visas which probably cover the majority of workers). We are talking about whether a migrant is tied to that employer as he would be with an HIB in the US, or as he is in Saudi for the duration of the contract at least. |

Sheikh, I'd opt for a more benign term than halfwit. Something less judgemental. Might I suggest 'Fiscally Challenged?' (or just plain FC.) Another good option is 'Differently Abled in Financial Transactions' (or just plain DAFT.)
Everyone thinks he looks daft but you can have your dream... |

| Does the fact that you haven't erased all memory of Shakin' Stevens from your mind have anything to do with your liking for euphemisms ... |

No connection Sheikh, but try erasing this from your memory:

Ole Shakey needs an empty grave waiting for him with 'He finally let us R.I.P' as an epitaph ....
Even after the torture he put us through ... his lyrics suggest he still thinks he's going to heaven ... not likely ... |
