I use the buses in Cuernavaca and have never had any problem, other than drivers wanting me to leap off while the bus is still moving! I've also used the Metro in Mexico City a number of times and it was fine. Sure, you'll be crowded in there with everyone else and there may be some inadvertant touching, but everyone gets it. Just use your common sense and you should be fine. I get more comments on the streets and had my ass grabbed once but I don't feel unsafe here at all. |

Yep, people who need a lot of personal space won't feel too comfortable on the metro in rush hour in el DF. Inadvertant touching and non-optional hands resting on body parts is one thing - but if you get into a crowded carriage be wary of stray hands attempting to stroke your genitals while covering up their arm with their brief case. Sorry to be so explicit. Just watch out for the pervs... |

Is that ever enforced though? The women only carriage on Linea 2 at rush hour, the one I most often use, doesn't seem to ever have anyone paying the slightest bit of attention to the concept...
I long ago came to the conclusion that all rules and laws in Mexico, be it traffic lights, number plates, one way streets etc are followed on a voluntary basis! |

I was once in Mexico City after dark with my husband, then boyfriend. This was admittedly, 4 years ago. It was late, like 9:30pm. There was a uniformed person who steered me into the women only lane and him into the other cars, we were only going two stations then changing lines, but that person wouldn't let me go in the "mixed" car! On the next line we had no problem. I don't remember now which line it is, but as we arrive and leave DF through TAPO, it may very well have been the pink one. |

Yesterday I was in Tuxtla with my girlfriend, talking in a park. As we got up to leave I felt this hand slap my ass, and I turned around to see a five to six year old indigenous girl. I was so confused, had no idea what to make of it or how it happened, I kept saying to my girlfriend how crazy that was, that this little girl slapped my ass, but she didnt think anything of it.
Anyway, I dont know the DF that well, but I think overall youll be fine. Just get used to the sound of whistles and catcalls, and avoid little girls. DF is a big international city too, so its not like the people arent used to seeing foreigners, which is good too.

I think it's voluntary at some stations, but others put up gates manned by security. If you time it just right...boarding at like 4:55 PM at Tacubaya, they put up all the gates at 5PM, so for the rest of the stations only women board. The only drawback there is that it's impossible to get a seat... |

to the OP
I think you WILL have more problems than the average native, but that doesn't mean you'll have a lot. so much of it depends on where you are, how you dress, your body language, etc. and if anything happens, don't feel like the macho culture dictates that you have to accept it. mexican women generally don't accept it, and neither should you if it bothers you. i would say that the metro is also much much more of a problem than the bus. i've never seen anything happen on the bus, but the metro is like a seething cauldron of sexual tension during rush hour every day.
regarding the women only cars, i've never been in one. the times i've accidentally tried to board at that end, i was forced to go around and board farther down. as far as i can tell, it's pretty strictly enforced.
regarding DF in general, cosmopolitan is the last word i would use to describe the place. it's probably 99% mexican by population, and there are millions of people there who rarely or never have contact with foreigners. you can find pockets of foreigners, or you can go months without seeing anyone who stands out as foreign (particularly if you are using public transportation). you will almost definitely stand out unless you live in a select few sections of the city. |
