|
|
Hello, I'm planning to teach in China this summer or fall, but I'm not sure where to go. I love cities, so that part is a no-brainer- but I want to go to a city that still maintains some aspects of traditional chinese culture. A place whose anceint traditions have not been destroyed by economic develop yet has some of the modern amenities a fat american is used to. The more diversity the better. Also, I'm a Jazz/Rock musician, so a city where I can find people to play with would be nice. Whether you can suggest a place that fulfills all these criteria or just one of them would be greatly appreciated.

The ancient traditions were all destroyed by the cultural revolution anyway, not economic development. |

Maybe New York or somewhere like London possible. Have not seen anywhere in this huge country that could fulfill all of your requirements. |

Hong Kong would be a better bet, assuming that the OP is qualified to work there, that is... |

Xi'an would most likely be the best bet..... |

Maybe Hangzhou/Suzhou/Ningbo or somewhere like that. Shanghai would probably be the best regarding amenities and for music. Then you can visit plenty of older-seeming places.
However jammish is correct...so much was destroyed before Mao died never mind since! Many Chinese cities can seem like cultural wastelands...
Then again...there's always KTV! |

Or any other second tier city near Shanghai. |

Yep, agree with previous two posters. Suzhou should suffice. |

Suzhou would be my first choice too, but it's a small city. My second choice would be Chengdu. |

Why not Tianjin? There are some piles of garbage dating back to the early 21st. century which might hold some Oriental Treasures for the intrepid traveller. Imitation colonial works abound as well not far from Chou He (臭河) , the famous waterway meandering its way through the city.
Lots to see and do for two hours. |
