I guess I am starting to feel you all are my primary circle of friends in ESL. Always coming here for advice!
I just saw an old position listed for an ESL instructor for Kuwait Airways, my former employer. Needless to say I emailed them offering my services again should they ever have need. I am sure it is too late for that one for the time being. But is there more of this type of work available? If so, I really need to tap that vein. I am a former flight attendant in the Middle East. I have a medical background, can teach first aid, etc. (which was a fairly major component of our training when I was a flight attendant) as well as ESL.
I would probably be a natural for this type of job. Are these jobs out there in the Middle East, or is Kuwait Airways alone in needing ESL instruction? How about Saudia?
Let me guess: All the flight attendants are male, and a woman won't be hired to teach men? Or am I already getting too cynical?

Discussion of various airlines have shown up here over the years. Why not try searching their websites... Emirates? Gulf Air? Saudia?
I believe there was a discussion of Emirates not that long ago... try a search...

My thoughts exactly, but I must not have used the right search terms yet; nothing is turning up. It is a difficult thing to search on because nearly all posts on "airline" or "flight attendant" have to do with traveling, not teaching, and adding "job" doesn't make a difference. |

Not true. All the major Middle East airlines, including Saudia, have female flight attendants. However, although you'll find plenty of Saudi men working in this job, you won't find any Saudi women. I expect the same is true for the other Gulf states as well - I very much doubt the job of flight attendant is considered suitable for a Gulf woman. |

As Clep has said there are unlikely to be vacancies training female attendants, most are expats. |

Why? Is it because of the segregation problem or other cultural restrictions?
So, how do you explain a Gulf woman (e.g Kuwaitis, Saudi, Emiratis, etc) is working as film actor in different Arab films, and see her next to a male actor in a romantic film?! Or see a Gulf woman as a singer or working as journalist in mixed environment? And the majority of Gulf families watch these films where the Gulf woman is acting!!!
So, what is the difference if a Gulf woman working as a journalist, film actor or flight attendant?
Which is more critical for a Gulf woman, to be a flight attendant or a film actor or a singer? |

If you can't figure that one out for youself, why not ask one of your many Saudi friends?

Apart from the fact that such things are not mine to 'explain', you could probably count the number of Gulf women working as 'film stars' on the fingers of both hands.
Anyway, since you seem to think that Gulf families consider the job of flight attendant a suitable one for the daughters, maybe you can tell us how many Saudi women you have seen working in the profession. |

That was how I got the job at Kuwait Airways. ALL flight attendants were foreign, most Arabs from other countries (Palestinians and Egyptians, esp), but with some Greeks and Goans and British (and me) thrown in. There was one Kuwaiti pilot and most of the higher administration was Kuwaiti. They also were hiring Kuwaiti technical staff, mechanics, etc. The people who dumped the trash were, of course, Pakistanis. Right before I left, the first Kuwaiti flight attendant was hired, a male. People used to be hired in large part based on how well they spoke English. Now they are probably hiring many more nationals and then teaching them English? But no, not women, I wouldn't expect.
Why? Few people are going to allow their daughter to work in a job where she is both on display AND within reach AND completely outside parental control, especially given the rather 'loose' reputation of flight attendants! And that reputation was somewhat well deserved, too. I did get several 'temporary marriage' proposals during my time with Kuwait Airways, too.
This great flight attendant position paid all of $300 dollars a month back then, plus free room and board, and $1 million in benefits, especially the constant free travel on a whim at the drop of a hat. Layovers were long because KAC only flew to most locations twice a week, so a flight to Bombay or Casablanca meant either 3 or 4 all expense paid days there in good hotels. Most attendants (not me, of course) smuggled one bottle of Johnny Walker Black per flight which sold for $100, and this was tolerated. You showed it to the customs agents, and 99% of the time they waved it through as long as it was only one. So there was a few hundred $$ per week extra for most cabin and c0ckpit crew.
I was barely out of high school and it was a great deal for me. Best few years of my life. I would still be working there if I hadn't needed to quit to go to college. |

You know the answers to all these questions 007, why ask silly question. You are more familiar witj all of these problems women face, cultural, stereotypes, etc that any of us when it comes to all of those professions you listed. Agent 007, are you so bored that you are arguing topics you are well aware of? Is it time for a new mission? |

Saudia have been employing male and female flight attendants on long haul and domestic flights for the last 3 years. |

Nobody is arguing this. What we are saying is that while some local men in the Gulf may do this job, local women never would. Not for the time being, anyway. |
