I'd look into Nanjing if I were you -- it has a lot of history, and you can still see a lot of things related to that history that are still intact. I went there like five years ago, but I remember it had very classy restaurants, and there were also some good clubs with live music. I went to one near Nanjing U., I think, that looked like a real dive but had nice people and a good band. The bad thing about Nanjing is that it has pretty crappy weather -- cold in winter, but boiling hot in summer. If it weren't for the weather, I'd move there. I can't deal with the heat. It's also a nice size -- big, but liveably big, not like Shanghai. I haven't really enjoyed living in Shanghai because I find it overwhelmingly large.

Sorry to sidetrack, but is it possible that there's a city in China that has possibly more sweaty, shirt-drenching, eyeball-dehydrating weather than Bangkok?

I just left there last week, and bejesus, in Spring it was 38 degrees with 100% humidity.
