A recent Czech / American production about returned expatriates recently came out. Has anyone seen it? What do you think?
Basically a rexpatirate is a person who was an expatriate and tried to return home but then left their home country after a few years to become an expatriate again. The setting was Prague but I think the thesis could apply to any number of countries.
The thesis is pretty daming (intentionally mispelled). It basically states that the third phase of culture shock (adjustment) is a stage where the rexpatriate "gives up" and accepts anadolecent lifestyle in perpetuity where he/she doesn't have to deal with certain unsavory fact of normal mundane life. The rexpatriate suffers from PDRS (Prague Delusional reality Syndrome)
I'm not saying I wholly agree or wholly disagree with the movie, but it definitely leaves you with something to think about.

Must have been written by people who were jealous of the lifestyle and didn't really understand - particularly when they use a silly term like "anadolecent lifestyle". Theres nothing adolescent about the lifestyle of the great majority of expatriates. And, living in countries where things don't work well or smoothly, corruption consumes too much energy, and even the electricy isn't on all the time - well that is hardly an adolescent's game - is it?
And what is DELUSIONAL about wanting to live a more interesting lifestyle?
The story seems like it was written by somebody's mom who didn't really understand why her "baby boy" wouldn't come back home - and uses psycho-babble to explain it.
Pretty much BS in my opinion.
But that's just my opinion.

Good one.
I found it to be a great movie. I laughed harder than I've laughed in years. The only thing funnier is people who get huffy at the suggestion that expats sometimes act in a less than mature manner or that expatirates aren't always playing with a full deck.
One need only read a few pages here to fully understand the meaning of DELUSIONAL REALITY SYNDROME.
Let's call our version ETDRS - Englsih Teaching Delusional Reality Syndrome. It's where contrary to all the evidence an English teacher still believes they are an emotionally and psychologically well-adjusted professional in a job with unlimited advancement potential.
ETDRS seems to be most evident in tedkarma, who believes 18 years of Teaching English proves he has his life more "together" than a guy who managed to write, produce, direct, and market an insightful movie. He uses the Euphemism "interesting" to delude himself that he hasn't acted as an adolescent at times. How hilarious is that? Another good one is that moving to a country with third world living conditions for a salary that can't even buy a ticket home is a rational decision only a mature adult would make.
