I am interesting in working in a middle or high school next term, however all the websites I have found seem to cater for university or college teaching. Where does one go to search for work in a middle school? |

Most of these jobs are tied up with the agencies. They do the recruiting: arrange your work visa; accommodation and salary. They charge the school about 20% extra for doing so (if you are lucky! - 25/30% if you are not).
The schools don't want all this hassle - they just want a performing monkey, so that they can charge the parents a hefty premium for your "services".
As usual in China, it's all about money.
The average fee charged by the agency to the school is 10,000 RMB a month. So what salary are they offering you? |

interesting
Are you a CHinese English teacher - ?
As said above, FTs get hired through go-betweens though I doubt they all cash in 10'000 A MONTH! They deploy you at various schools that pay them, and they will pay you your hourly wage.
The downside of this is that you may end up short one month because of unannounced cancellations of classes.
Middle schools are not always allowed to recruit directly, hence the use of training cnetres. |

Thanks Roger, I'll do the same next time for you.
So it seems in order to find a middle school job, I'll need to use an agency/recruiter. Can anyone recommend some good and reputable agencies or recruiters that specialize in placing teachers in middle schools? |

I was going to point it out [its a very Chinese error], but thought it too cruel.
www.chinatefl.com runs ads on a provincial basis. The plus is that you can sidestep the agent, who has had some bad press, and go straight to the school. Yes, they have some middle schools. I taught university in China, and teach Chinese middle schoolers sent by rich families to Australia at the moment.
I can only comment that the university students were better, in that they were less immature, if you get my drift, than the present crop of middle schoolers.
A link to a private middle school, where you're just a conversation partner, is

I wouldn't work anywhere for that salary, but that's just me. These jobs are just your basic TEFL Cert. If you've got some tertiary credentials, I'm sure you could negotiate. |

You could just walk in and ask if they have a job for you.
Ask around in the city you want to work about which school has the best reputation, and which one the worst. That'll narrow down your options a bit cuz most cities have tons of middle schools (most of them have numbers by the way, like hospitals).
Prepare for huge classes when you do find a place. 50+ students is pretty much a given and call yourself lucky if it's below 70.
G'luck! |
