Hi Fancynan,

Absolutely, I was planning on staying in a hostel until I remembered a website I had heard about ages ago and completely forgotten about: www.couchsurfing.com

It's a website of people who are willing to host travelers on their couch for free (theoretically so that when they travel they do the same thing in other countries). It's not only free, thus saving you many pretty pennies whilst you're in your unemployed state, but it's a great way to meet locals who can fill you in on all the hints and tips for living in Paris. I did it for my first week in Paris whilst I was apartment hunting and I highly recommend it.

Best of luck and hope it all works out for you!

I have used a couple of other sites that are similar: globalfreeloaders and the Hospitality Club. I have stayed with people in Berlin, Paris and Rouen. I have hosted people from Germany, Israel, Canada, Australia and the US. I've never tried couchsurfing, but have heard of it. Thanks for the info!
Nan
