I've been looking into teaching some online classes. There seem to be lots of adverts, I've looked at monster, hotjobs, careerbuilder, and educate-inc . I'm just not sure which are legit.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has done online classes. Was it a good experience? How difficult is it? Are there any companies to avoid? Any that you recommend?

I'm interested too - but most of it seems too easy and I have yet to hear from someone who really makes any money AND gets paid.

Always someone who knows someone. Is this like addressing envelops?

It is not teaching but ETS seems to always be looking for people to be TOEFL IBT raters for the speaking section. It is pretty well paid (around $20 per hour, I think).

Just go to ets.og and click on the TOEFL link, then under English Language Teachers
Click: Become a TOEFL iBT Rater

One of my friends is doing an online TEFL cert at the moment. The other night he asked me to help him out so I went round his house and had a look at hiscourse. Does anyone have any info about tutoring on teacher training courses online?

This fact and the others obtained from the site are rather important!

Quote:
Who is eligible to serve as a TOEFL iBT rater?
To be eligible, TOEFL iBT raters must

reside in the continental U.S. or Hawaii
be a U.S. citizen, a resident alien, or authorized to work for remuneration in the U.S.
hold a B.A. or higher degree, (M.A. preferred), from an accredited college or university
have experience assessing non-native speakers' written or spoken English
be qualified in English language teaching (e.g., TEFL, CELTS, DELTA).
Additionally, raters who are non-native English speakers must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Test of Spoken English (TSE), and/or Test of Written English (TWE). Experience living in an English-speaking country for one year or more is preferred.

My wife teaches through Sylvan online. I am pretty sure you have to be a certified teacher to work for them. I posted the link to the application on their website below. It is a quick and easy application. You can work between 8-29 hours per week it pays $10 per hour. You can teach anywhere in the world as long as you have a high speed internet connection.

I wonder why you have to reside in the US to be a TOEFL rater? I can understand if they want you to be a US citizen and have the qualifications, but what difference can it make where you live?

Oh, well sorry to have raised some hopes...

Ah but for the savvy, not a problemo.

Got an address back in the states? Pick up a free AIM phone line and you have a phone number back in the states. Ok? Need to prove you are back in the states with an IP address? Just pay $20 a month for a server that allows you to have a proxy server, run your personal proxy server and you are in business.

You are a US citizen with an address, phone number and IP address from the states. No way to tell if you are really in the states or not.

Is there?

The spirit of the rules? Followed. You are a US citizen and reside is a very complex idea, what does reside really mean after all? My permanent residence is in the US. Whatever country I am in doesn't give me anything but temporary residence.

Here's some places I've found. Anyone know anything, good or bad, about them?

I've taught online and can say it can be a decent but not great income. Understand that you can be competing against folks in India or elsewhere with decent accents and solid fundamentals that will work for a good bit less than $10 US per hour.

You also absolutely have to deal with all of the technical quirks that go along with it. If you're not super computer savvy and comfortable helping someone across the world troubleshoot problems with microphones and headsets and other similar stuff, I would steer clear.

As with all work, it's as good or as bad as the students and the school with which you're affiliated. Online private classes are possible to engage, but like in real life, the students can flake and if you're not in their timezone it can be a real hassle to figure out when you can meet that is mutually acceptable.

I would suggest giving it a shot if only to try it and see for yourself.
