Writerman, One question that I have is...Chinese TV...NTSC like the USA or PAL like Australia? You imply that USA video tape will play on Chinese boxes..is this correct?

OK...let me put the question this way...if I buy DVD's here (USA) will they work there? Too bad about the vcr...I could tape some good stuff off TV. It would be interesting to see how students react to some of the shows like "Beyond" with James van Praag or "Crossing Over" with John Edward.

i would just like to voice my emphatic disagreement with Peter and Betrand's claim regarding the chinese's inability to debate. True, they seem somewhat disclined to vociferous argumentative practices like many from people from Western cultures so unwaveringly cling, but I have mediated some very original (and spirited) debates while teaching in China. Instead of "telling them what to think" like someone advised, you might first use topics that are not terribly controversial, and then move onto to more interesting and provocative subjects according to your students' level of comfort. you might do away with the book, too (although some of them are good) and merely make selections that your students will be able to relate to. good luck!
