It is a tough situation, and I think we can all sympathize with someone who is having family issues back home and has an urgent need to go back.

Realistically, the school probably won't do anything about her pulling a runner. It would be more trouble than it's worth, and usually, unless there is some huge loss of face or money involved. Most schools don't like to involve the PSB or the embassies in their affairs if they can at all help it, and in probably 95% of the cases are all bark and no bite.

That doesn't mean that running is ethical, but if the contract has already been broken, then ethics start playing less of a role. I'm usually with clark on this -- give the school proper notice and do things by the books, that way at least you can say that you did your part (or your friend, in this case -- using the general "you" here). But of course it is always up to your own discretion. If a situation is intolerable, or if there is an emergency back home, make the choice you think is best. Chances of their being any real consequences for taking off and going home are pretty slim to be honest.

So what happened? What did she do in the end or has that still to be decided?

Personally I don't approve of doing a runner in principle but appreciate that some situations might merit it. Given your facts, I think your mate might have to/have had to.

I doubt very much whether the school would pursue the matter or she'd have any problems returning. However, nothing surprises me in the PRC.
