Istanbul can be a new adventure everyday for a newbie. The newbies should be aware of the high crime rate in Istanbul. The cost of living is quite high too.

High crime rate in Istanbul? I'd say it isn't any higher than in other major Western cities.

If there is an exceptionally high crime rate I haven't noticed it. I feel safer here than I did in Canada or the UK, and neither I nor my colleagues/friends here have experienced the things I've heard about back home in supposedly mild-mannered Canada- break ins, stabbings, etc. I know it isn't 100% safe here, but where is?

You have never experienced break-ins etc. here?

Since I have been in Turkey I have had my flat broken into and been pickpocketed twice after leaving cash machines.

Istanbul is the world's safest city? Shocked

Probably because crime just isn't reported.

No break ins yet, no muggings, no pick pocketing...yet. Seriously. Five years so far. Knock on wood. I took a one week trip to Bulgraria and was robbed on the third day. I feel safer here.

hehe.. I love it when the crime rate is mentioned and people are quick to throw in some interesting opinions..
First of all, this is not a Western city, major or minor.
Second of all, We are talking about Istanbul and I don't give a rats a*s about the other cities, the orginal question had to do with Istanbul and I added some necessary facts for the discussion.
Don't get me wrong, I too love Istanbul.. But she is like a madame; old, dirty, will take all your money if she can, not in very good shape, and not too safe unless you are very careful. Twisted Evil
