Dear Mr. Moderator and avid readers,

Could I make a small suggestion?

I find many of the comments on this page to both irrelevant and down right offensive. Particularly the recent debates on male/female attire and women driving.

Might I remind our dear readers and posters that this page is supposed to be a forum on teaching in KSA not a place to rant, rave and put forth 'extreme' views.

For the record my wife wears an obya, but her hair is uncovered.

She is neither a prostitute nor an old hag.

She has never had a problem because of this and I am sure neither have the many Philippine or Indian women we see walking bareheaded around town.

Quite the opposite in fact, we've always found Saudis, both male and female to be very warm and friendly.

My wife is perfectly capable of telling the young shababi where to go if they show a little too much interest in her..............far better than me.

Methinks you underestimate the power of the 'weaker sex' to protect themsleves.

She would love to be allowed to drive.

She has never encountered any of the potential problems cited by certain posters while driving in her own country. Quite the opposite in fact, most male drivers have behaved as gentlemen, treating her with the up most respect.

Driving for women would give them a measure of freedom that men fear.............same goes for the dress code, all about control, keeping the little lady at home chained to the sink?

Isn't a great shame that 50% of the society are not given the chance to contribute, women are just as capable of flying an aircraft, designing a bridge, performing an operation, discovering oil in the desert...........what a great waste.

Just a thought, isn't it the case of the men being a problem here, being unable to control their baser urges? Arent they the ones who need to be re-educated and taught to respect women? Or is the sight of a few filamentous outgrowth of dead cells from the skin on her head as she drives past too much to take?

This is not an invitation for debate.

These are my thoughts.

I respect Saudi society, I don't force my views on anyone, far from it, I am not in the position to advocate change and neither is it my right to do so as an ex-pat. Saudis pay my wages but I still have a right to my opinion.............which apart from here and amongst a few close friends and like minded Sauids I keep to myself.

Moderator, do your job and lock this post before the vitriol ensues.please.

Watch your step Mr Bond, you're opening a can of worms there.............which is far from my initial intention!

Wasn't Hitler democratically elected (well almost) and didn't he have the support of the German people...................oops there's another can of worms opened.

Dont worry Mr Arab Strap, my King Cobra likes purple worms, especially when they are boiled in olive oil.

Hitler used backroom deals, not votes, to come to power.

QUOTE:
"Hitler never had more than 37 percent of the popular vote in the honest elections that occurred before he became Chancellor. And the opposition among the 63 percent against him was generally quite strong. Hitler therefore would have never seen the light of day had the German Republic been truly democratic. Unfortunately, its otherwise sound constitution contained a few fatal flaws. The German leaders also had a weak devotion to democracy, and some were actively plotting to overthrow it. Hitler furthermore enjoyed an almost unbroken string of luck in coming to power. He benefited greatly from the Great Depression, the half-senility of the president, the incompetence of his opposition, and the appearance of an unnecessary backroom deal just as the Nazis were starting to lose popular appeal and votes"

Same could be said for Margaret Thatcher...............almost as vile as Mr H in my opinion.................

We're straying a bit from the topic here, which if I remember rightly was to stick to teaching matters was it not?

Much as I like a debate, thing is on this forum it often disolves into a slagging match amongst our more regular contributors...........

Margaret Thatcher did not kill 500,000 Gypsies, and she was the 'iron woman' of her time, in the sense of 'democracy' and not 'demo-crazy'!
