Not sure Atatrk and the folks in the emniyet would see that as a bonus. It might be preferable to sing the istiklal marşı and wear a lapel pin of flag and Yer Man.

Or just say "Isk-en-der keee-bab sev-i-yooooor-ooooom" in a really cute voice. That kills 'em evey time.

Yes, it is definitely possible to get a work permit without leaving the country. British Side is currently doing this for me and another teacher. My friend's is done (last week) but mine is taking a little longer due to some name change problems...

This is the process so far, for me anyway...
1. Get 6 month Ikamet
2. Get permission from the government in Ankara to work (involves sending a translation of your CV, diplomas, certificates, etc. and waiting a long time)
3. Go to Aksaray and get either a new Ikamet or a stamp in your current Ikamet. In my friend's case, they just wrote it right in his current Ikamet, stamped it, and signed it. In my case, I have to get a new Ikamet because of a name change.

I hope this helps!

Yeah, that helps very much. I just met a girl from Azerbaijan who's going through the same thing - she had to go to Ankara today. She's got a lot more problems than most of us do, of course. I don't think the government looks too fondly on Azeri immigrants.

So, I have an ikamet. My current uni got permission for me to work from YK, but they never gave me a paper or anything. They just told me that YK approved it.

I guess wherever I work next academic year will just have to deal with it - sending the papers off and stuff. Hopefully, it works out.

Thanks for all the info!

I have been here in adana for 18 months, at first was doing the visa runs, but now have the work visa.
Its easy as pie to get a residance permit, its all down to your school at the end of the day. They just sent a lot of paper work to ankara, a month later my work permit, down the police station a few times and bingo!
6 months lots more photos, a lot more paper work and my visa.
I am ın adana though, sounds like we usually get a sweeter deal than you guys in istanbul, no backpacker types usualy.
If you have a work permit your school will be paying around 300ytl a month, so thats probably why most schools dont bother.
