Hi
I am an American female thinking about applying for supervisor roles at the HCT colleges above (also at Medinat Zayed). I am also about to apply for a similar role at the UAEU. I have some information about salaries from a previous post, but I would appreciate any other opinions, however subjective, on which would be a better place to work/issues to consider if I were given the choice. I'd be coming with my husband and he'd probably look for some part time work in the local area (he also works from home). I'd also like to know how long it takes to get to Dubai by car from the other three colleges.
Thank you so much! |

Are you allowed to limit your application to the colleges you want? Normally HCT puts people where they want them, not necessarily where they want to go.

Hi VS
Well I'm not sure, but I do know that we can choose to apply (or not) to specific colleges that have posted positions on the leadership jobs board.
I don't want to apply to any that have serious problems for supervisors!
Thanks again |

OK... I'll let some of the current people provide updates if they can, but there has been some buzz on here concerning dissatisfaction with Fujairah - because it is rather small and off the beaten track.
Madinet Zayed has little or no track record yet, but it is WAY off the beaten track. I assume that you have read here about the very long daily commute.
A search should turn up the comments on those two. One problem for you is that none of the posters here know much about recruitment of management level.

According to friends working at the various HCT colleges (& my experience), Dubai Men's College is by far the best college to work at of the three you mentioned. People in general are competent, well-qualified, sincere in their teaching, and amazingly normal (as opposed to some of the more 'eccentric' characters found in the smaller colleges).
RAK Women's has a rather...uh...oppressive working environment these days. A person I know who left Fujeirah recently described it as generally staffed with the bottom-feeders of the applicant pool, although it is a lovely place to live (as is RAK, if you don't have children, that is!).
Having said that, the current director of Dubai Men's College is leaving at the end of the year, so the great working environment there may be in for a change.... |

Hey thanks for the insight!
I was interested you mentioned about RAK and Fujairah not being so good if you have kids. Is that because it is boring for them there, or because the schools are not so good, or some other reason?
By the way, would the chances of my husband finding work (ie in a non-HCT English speaking environment such as a college or school) be the same in Fujairah and RAK?)
Thanks again! |

My friends at RAK have echoed the above analysis of the Women's College; apparently the Men's is better. There are some management issues at RAK Women's, as stated. They say there are also some long-timers who are slack to the max, and who will do anything to get out of doing what is termed 'work'. This may change in the near future, rumour has it. There is apparently going to be a culling of those perceived as longterm 'chancers'. |

Fujairah Women's and Men's is getting a new director. Things could change by next year.
Fujairah has only one school for children, which all HCT children go to. No options.
Most supervisors don't last long at FWC. Some have, but most don't.
Fujairah has very little traffic and better housing.
No way a husband could get a job in Fujairah unless he got a job at the college. There are very few job options there.
Madinet Zayed is very small and much too far away!
Go to DMC. I have heard from all supervisors I've met that they like it there a lot.
Good luck and be nice to your teachers.
DO NOT go to UAEU (UGRU program?). Most people are leaving. The people there get treated pretty badly. |

I don't know what sort of 'supervisor' role you are likely to get at UGRU as an external candidate. They normally find people for senior posts by asking folk who already work there to apply. Criteria for selecting men are fairly clear - you have to be taller than average, or suck up to the people who are already in management, or both. Women tend to be promoted for being very boring, although there are one or two exceptions who have a life outside planet UGRU. |
