We had a thread here a while back where the general consensus was DO NOT TOUCH THE STUDENTS in sexual terms....
Well, just yesterday i read something that took my breath away. Our school has extra black/green boards all over the place. There was this one board in a general viewing are with the topic of Techer Appreciation Day. After first reading about how about how, maybe, one might want to treat a teacher to coffee i continued on to the next blurb. Can you imagine what i saw?!! It went something like this:
I have a wonderful teacher and I really like him very much. He is so handsome and I always look forward to seeing him. I am attracted to my teacher and i don't know what to do about it. Sometimes i think he likes me too by the things he says. I don't know if it is just his teaching style or if he really likes me.
There is not one student at this school who is over eighteen years of age!
I am shocked. Believe me when I say that this is NO lie.
Humbly yours, |

Has the teacher done anything yet?
Could it be a standard schoolgirl/schoolboy crush?
I feel like the message didn't give enough information to be able to judge the teacher.

Well, the FUNNY thing about it is that it appears to be some kind of representation of normality in relations around here in that it was part of a general posting about teacher appreciation day printed on a chalk board in a common area for the students to view. In other words, it was sanctioned by the school and was not a private message made public. |

Aaaaah. I see now. Damn, I think I have just totally missed the point on 9.8 out of the last 10 posts that I've read.
It does sound a bit odd now.

I'd guess two things:
One, that whoever put up the message didn't understand what it was really saying (we all know a lot of English teachers whose understanding of English is limited, and fake it a lot), or two, that this sort of behavior by foreign teachers is considered normal. You know, "Those foreigners can't help themselves," or "Those foreigners don't understand that it's wrong." In a way, you could say it's a racist assumption by the school administration, but the other part of the problem is that foreign teachers sometimes trot out that line when they get caught doing something they shouldn't do. |

I wouldn't be so quick to put any blame on the teacher. Young girls tend to get crushes on their male teachers and it is (usually) not something brought about by the teacher himself. That note doesn't necessarily indicate that he flirted with her or that he likes her...that's just her (most likely distorted) perception.
A male friend of mine here in Canada received a note from a girl in his grade 7 class one day with the following poem:
Roses are red
Violets are blue
I want to **** you
Trust me when I say that he did nothing to warrant this "attention". |

Oh, you card, you!
You must admit, though, given the nature of this board (EFL teaching and the fact that we seem to enjoy beating the issue of student dating to death here), we can be forgiven our daily tresspasses in our assumptions of what you meant.
I think though that almost everything that's been said so far (even one of the two possibilities kurochan pointed out) still is pertainant, though.
Personally, I think it sounds like a flight of teenage fancy. But that's just a guess.
PS You didn't say that it wasn't a foreign teacher either. I'm curious now to know which it is. |

Two recent newspaper reports:
One teacher was put to death a couple of weeks ago. He had raped some 12 girls.
And this week, another teacher was detained after several girls had identified him as a rapist. |

I've been put in this position. As a young, blue eyed blond haired fellow I'd get a lot of attention from students. It was sometimes to the point where if I stood still for 5 seconds someone would stand next to me so that they were touching me or trying to hold my hand as they talked (although the Chinese tend to be more physical than Westerners). When it was little 2nd graders it was ok and cute and all of that. When it was high schoolers, it was really awkward.
On the other hand, my coworker sometimes made sexual comments about some of his students, saying 'age of consent is 16 in Britain.' It definately goes both ways.
I'd hate it if someone accused me of any wrong doing, though. |

My female students hit on my co-teacher constantly. He was an attractive young American guy. After he left I had two girls in particular who would use Mike's name in all of the drills we did. "Tomorrow I will write a letter to Mike," "I feel lonely because I miss Mike," "I want to go to America so I can see Mike." It got kinda old. Luckily, they were college aged so it wasn't really inappropriate. I think students getting a crush on the teacher is pretty common, so I wouldn't jump on that teacher immediately without knowing more of the situation. |

How long has it been since you were a teen? I can remember having a school-boy crush on my 12th. grade English teacher. She was gorgeous!
I still have "fantasies" of her from time to time..................
The only thing she did was "look good". Why all this talk about blaming the teacher? The note didn't imply that anything was going on, but simply stated the student's own private fantasy. Nothing any of us can do about that, aside from not shaving, wearing ragged dirty clothing, and avoiding regular bathing.

That reminds me that just last week, a couple of my female students at my uni told me about their rock band. They name of the band is....(my full name). After falling off my chair laughing, I asked them why and they said they wanted to give it a cool sounding name. Now I've got my "band" going around clubs playing Nirvana covers. |

Speaking of bands, this post reminds me of that Van Halen Song "Hot For Teacher" from their album "1984". God, I love that video!
LYRICS Spoken:
"oh wow, man !"
"wait a second man. whaddaya think the teachers gonna look like this year ? "
"my butt, man !"
T-t-teacher stop that screaming, teacher dont you see ?
Dont wanna be no uptown fool.
Maybe I should go to hell, but Im doin well,
Teacher needs to see me after school.
Chorus:
I think of all the education that I missed.
But then my homework was never quite like this.
Got it bad, got it bad, got it bad,
Im hot for teacher.
I got it bad, so bad,
Im hot for teacher.
Spoken:
"hey, I heard you missed us, were back !"
"i brought my pencil"
"gimme something to write on, man"
I heard about your lessons, but lessons are so cold.
I know about this school.
Little girl from cherry lane, how did you get so bold ?
How did you know that golden rule ?
Chorus
(guitar solo)
"oh man, I think the clock is slow"
"i dont feel tardy"
"class dismissed" |

My husband used to get all kinds of love notes from LITTLE GIRLS when he taught at a girls' middle school in Korea. One of the notes actually said something to the effect of "You should leave your wife. She is old. I am sexy and young" (I was 23 at the time and the student was 13).
Bold as brass tacks these little girls. My husband and I quite agreed that they really had no idea of the implications of what they were suggesting, and were trying on sexuality the way some kids try on Mom's make up and high heels. It takes a caring teacher to redirect this kind of thing into appropriate behaviour, and to try not to crush the fragile ego of a child in the process. |
