Greetings and blessings again, my fellow professionals! This is a quick "calling all newbies" message. My students and I want to select about 7 or 8 newcomers --or even old timers-- who wouldn't mind being our guinea pigs. Here's the plan...
I've got 40 students who'll break into groups of 5 or 6. Each group will be responsible for introducing a certain part of Taipei to a foreigner. It could be something touristy like Gu-Gong or something practical, like getting through the visa process.
--Ooh! Almost forgot! These are older college students ranging in age from 21 - 44, so for the most part, you won't have to worry about the typical vacuous, deer-in-the-headlights stares.
If anyone is interested, please zap me a line at [email protected]. Thanks a zillion. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled program.

My gf and I might be interested in helping you out, but we're in Kaohsiung...getting to Taipei is easy enough, but how about tentative dates and things like that??
Ganbei! |

Ummm, right. Here is some more information about the Adopt-a-Foreigner program.
1. The events will probably take place on any given Saturday or Sunday, usually with a two-week notice.
2. The event may last from 2-4 hours or longer, depending upon the people involved (after all, someone might suggest a restaurant or hitting a local pub).
3. Anyone is welcome to participate.
4. Some ideas for places to visit:
Bureau of Foreign Affairs
Gu-Gong
Tianmu
Taipei 101
various bookstores
Shilin Night Market
Drivers License Bureau
Yangming Mountain
Snake Alley...
Got anymore ideas? We sure could use 'em! And remember, feel free to zap me a line at [email protected] for more details.

What a great idea! I wish I were still in Taipei to take part.
Good luck, and be sure to report back how it went! |

You should have your students put a short narrative with some photos on the web somewhere.
Would be fun to read, and probably a good experience for the students to create at well. |

This sounds like it could be fun.
Is this for credit or strictly volunteer?
I'm sure it has the potential to be a very good way to help the new teachers in Taipei get to know where things are and, thus, make their lives a lot easier. |

Actually, this was my midterm "exam" and it did turn out to be rather interesting. I was hoping more foreigners would show up but it was just Professor Peg, myself, and a CBC.
We went to some pretty cool places, such as Jilong (基隆), The Longshan Temple, The Taipei Underground Market, and some temple where a priest infuses you with lots of love medicine.
The toughest part was keeping my own big mouth shut. I know just enough Chinese to get myself into and out of trouble, and since the exercise was supposed to be conducted entirely in Chinese, I had to bite my tongue more than once to stop myself from "translating" or otherwise "helping" my poor students, all of whom passed, by the way. |
