Normally I'm all for the free market and everything (and actually, I still am), but Slim really bothers me. He's making his loot off the backs of poor Mexicans through his monopolistic companies. Someone like Bill Gates doesn't even bother me, because there are alternatives to his products, or hell, they ain't even that hard to pirate. But if you live in Mexico, it's impossible for anyone to NOT contribute to his wealth. The Telcel charges are ridiculous too. Hey Guy, now I know why you prefer to text message a lot instead of making actual phone calls. I lost over $300 pesos making a few very short phone calls, and some accidental dialings my phone made because I didn't lock the keypad.

On another note, anyone feel the quake(s) last night. I'm still dizzy from it. Smile

Took me a while to understand that one!

Did you know (I bet you did!), that is a misquote?

Apparentely, the translation from hebrew confused "camel" with "rope". Therefore the quote is:

"It is easier for a rope to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kindgom of heaven"

...which makes more sense,

As another capitalist, I guess we make our dollars anyway we can, and I cannot think of a better way than having a product or service that nearly everyone needs. Bill Gates does that too. I have never understood this "monopoly" thing. If everbody came to my company for English classes, I'd be dead chuffed!

Telmex bills are not too bad, and there are good alternatives to Telcel.

Having said that, I can't identify with Slim as, (Inbursa apart), he doesn't create companies or products, he isn't an entreprenuer, merely an investor. The same goes for Warren Buffet

I hear you Freddy!
I can't even choose another cell phone company because Telcel is the only one with reception in my area. I do send texts when ever possible. but mostly my calls are to and from my mother-in-law's land line. AT least I no longer have to pay hundreds of pesos to recieve calls from my parents!!!

Slim will likely soon over take Bill Gates, because Gates enjoyes giving away money, Slime, oh I mean Slim would sooner eat dirt. I agree that charity doesn't eliminate poverty, but making people wait 3 years for a phone line doesn't either. I'm not an economist, but wouldn't lower land-cell phone rates spur on the economy???

Oh and we felt the second-smaller quake down here, it must have been a little bit further to the east than the first one?

That was one of Slim's quotes...

...the other was "if you live by the opinion of others, you're dead"

So I guess that puts us in our place!

Yeah, the guy doesn't care about his image at all.

A great big new Carlos Slim orphanage-school for street children in Mexico City would do wonders for his image and probably make the lives of many young people a lot better. But what does he care!

A great big Carlos Slim Foundation for higher education scholarships or research funding at UNAM or any institution would probably go a long ways to improving Mexico's position in the world.

A grant to subsidize housing for the lowest income bracket (hey all those houses would need phone lines!) would definately improve living conditions for many many Mexicans.

No, none of those things would elimate poverty-Slime's right there, but it would make a difference to many people and might get him through the eye of that needle.

The thing is the irony of it all. The poor here are so poor, and so visible. It's not like that in England, Germany or the United States. And yet, this country, supposedly a poor country, produces the second richest man in the world, moreover, a man who does nothing for the poor.

It's a real clear reflection on class divisions in Mexico. One guy here is richer than everyone else on the planet except for one other dude. And half the country is poor as hell.

I do think, on a positive note, that in the past seven years, the Mexican middle class has grown a lot -- either that or credit has become so widely available that the borderline poor can now drive new cars, wear new clothes and appear to look middle class.

But I agree with the former poster that Slim really does need an image consultant. He could give a million dollars to Caritas, the Catholic charity, and make the front page of every newspaper in the country. And he wouldn't even notice the difference in his bank balance.

Hmm. While I think poverty in Mexico can't be compared to the "developed world", I've seen plenty of poor and destitute north of the border. Bill Gates can claim to help some poor... now... but he really didn't start giving away a lot of money until he hit the 40 billion mark.

It pretty much coincided with his marriage didn't it? He started giving away money after he got married. Once he got a good women by his side, he found generosity. I was going to point this out in my previous post, but couldn't think of a diplomatic way of putting it, plus I know nothing about Mrs. Slim. But something inside me tells me that Gates has a better relationship with his wife than Old Carlos does.

Just a note:

Soumaya Domit de Slim passed away a few years ago, but equally, I know nothing of her influence on her husband.
