I am really looking forward for an opportunity to teach English in China next year, but I've been hearing that schools don't like to hire non-native speakers which is really disappointing. I am Chinese, but born and raised in Canada all my life so my English is comparable to any native speaker. I also have a Bachelor's degree completed and currently doing a graduate certificate program. What do you think are my chances of getting an ESL teaching position in China? Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. |

Do you even know what a non-native speaker is? You, my Chinese Canadian brother/sister, is 100% native speaker. Non-native speakers are people from countries that don't have English as one of their official languages, like Russia or China.
If there is anything you need to worry about, it's schools that don't hire people with Asian face (especially Chinese face). So, stay away from the language mills AKA language training centres AKA language schools. Most of them need the foreign faces to attract customers. Focus your job searches on highschools, colleges and universities. The pay can be quite a bit lower but so are the working hours.
I am a Chinadian too eh! |
