Hubby has just told me his uncle eats a lot of rabbit/hare.

The Alevi beliefs seem really regional, the Kurdish Alevis in the UK claim not to be muslim at all. The Black Sea Alevis worship in the cem and the mosque although they cannot marry sunni muslims.

I agree Just Me, to convert to any religion for reasons other than conviction, is to insult it. My family have not put me under any pressure - yet!!

Turks don't know the difference between rabbits and hares anyway, they have the same word for both animals - just another example of their 'near enough is good enough' mentality!

Yeah, I get really upset that shark is 'kpek balık.' What do they call a dogfish then?

Tararu, I think it's the Kapadokya one they want to take me to. I'll ask about the Konya one...

I didn't know there were different kinds of Alevis! You learn something every day here on Dave's, even housebound with a baby). I like it though, how Alevis all like each other so much. My husband (who, I hate to say, borders on the Fascist at times), will even forgive a Kurd for being Kurdish if s/he is Alevi.

But he wouldn't set foot in a mosque if you put a gun to his head, and he's not even that religious. I think it's interesting that his parents didn't even tell him he was Alevi till he was 10 or 12, because at the time they were being persecuted by the government, and they didn't want him to be in danger from blabbing it all over school. It's like some people I knew in America descended from Eastern European immigrants, whose parents didn't leak it to them that they were Jewish until the kids were well into their 20s, as a way of protecting them, just in case.

One question, how come we all seem to be married to Alevis? Bloody weird if you ask me.
Anyway, the lodge in Kapodokya is very nice. I took a leaf from the sacred Mulberry tree for which l will probably burn in hell. My husband also took some dirt from below the sacred Mulberry tree. We gave both to my mother in law. Oh, we also gave her some water from the sacred spring there. When l was in Damascus, I visited the tomb of the daughter of Hussain. The family were very happy. However, l wasn't able to pick up any dirt or leaves on that trip which disappointed my anne a bit.

Hehe. Maybe the fried chicken grease is why my MIL got so funny about washing him...

Yeah, there are a lot of us. Interesting. Maybe because Alevis can drink? Smile Or maybe they're just more amenable to marrying foreigners. My husband's family would have (sort of) preferred that he married an Alevi, but to them, marrying a foriegner is 1000 times better than marrying a Sunni...
