Whatever Van Boredom, I don't even give a hoot what you think that I think. The reality is that I am the chameleon of sorts, and accept as well as fit into many cultures and nationalities with ease, thus I accept people of all faiths and distinctions. However, I dont like it when they arrogantly impress their narrow-minded views on me, or on other colleagues, and particularly on the students. By the way, the students are always in a better place intellectually than an arrogant Western, republican ex-military type to judge what is an acceptable opinion in their society and what is not. Unfortunately most military types I have met, havent a clue when enough invasion is enough.

Most of the military types I've met in Saudi have been quite reasonable, pleasant and open minded.

Glad you get it bje coz I've gotten lost in the tangled logic. To me it seems like they've set up a straw man here. Now I can't work out if they're after a blanket-ban on anyone with a military background or just the arrogant ones with a zeal for proselytizing?

Since you're of 'military background' VN, it strikes me that you're in altogether the wrong business for one whose only concern seems to be the bottom line. Why not just get caught in disputed waters, get yourself the gift of a nice shiny suit and then sell your story to the tabloids for a six figure sum - just like some of your brave comrades in arm recently did?

Oops, silly me! I forgot that, 'military hack' and all though you may be, still you had not heard of this particular example of the honour and valour displayed by Her Britannic Majesty's leading seapeople. Which is a shame, as they might have given you a career tip or two.

Cleo, I'm not "of a military background" but I'm definitely in the right business.

There's no business.

C'mon look at the guy (VN)....does he look exmilitary? I think the tendency is to generalize and put all exmilitary in one box. Although I am not exmilitary, I can't image that those that have served and are currently serving are all narrow-minded ultra-conservative.
I don't agree with any of the tactics, operations, atrocities, and mishaps intiated by the US military. (edited to appear more PC) I think it would be very difficult to find anyone with even a modicum of intelligence that would defend the US military, at this point.

Even though you know and I know this to be rationale for keeping these ignorant Orientalists with guns out of ESL. They apply, and they are hired, and yet they try to appear intelligent and "concerned" about educating the poor barbarians of the Middle East. Those are only the decent, genuine ones, the rest are simply closet racists with who have merely outgrown their fatigues. They get dangerous when they hang around town with hidden guns in their sleeves, because they know they are blond, aggressive and hated by the majority of the locals and dreaded their more intelligent colleagues.
