Outside publishing proofreading is commonly used to mean check for errors. We have proofreaders for exams.

With printing technology changes the whole system has changed. The norm for many, of not most books, now is that the author submits the 'manuscript' in MS Word format and this is then transferred to a DTP program, often Quark Express or Illustrator.

You know, I didn't even realize that commuting/tting followed that rule. Some English teacher I'll make, huh?

But that's English: so many bloody exceptions and odd rules that a lot of natives just stop caring to a point, especially when it comes to spelling. A lot of it just comes down to memorization, for which spell checkers can serve a useful purpose in filling in the gaps. Well, now I know. No more confusion over collission... what? I'm confused again

This is why I need to buy a number of grammar books and review them before I start...



I agree it has probably made spelling a lot worse, as anything that makes people have to remember less is apt to do.
