This is the first time in twenty years that I have not owned a car and it is driving me (no pun intended) potty!
My husband's family share one beat up old renault between the lot of them and are quite happy with this situation.
As soon as I am able however, I intend to buy my own wheels. Turkish second-hand cars seem very expensive compared to what I used to pay at auctions in the UK. I have heard that foreigners can buy cars more cheaply in Bulgaria, Georgia or Northern Cyprus. Is this true and if so are there any pitfalls? |

I wonder why the topic of buying cars gets no offers of help. If you were asking about the cheapest long distance bus company or the cheapest beer in Taksim you would be inundated with help. |

I've never even had a driver's license. That's why I'm not trying to help.
I think there's a car thread on the mymerhaba forum, or some car information somewhere on there... |

TEFLers can't afford cars, thrifty. You know that.
Actually, I could afford one but I don't have anywhere to park one, nor do i have any desire to drive anywhere within Istanbul.
It doesn't matter though, cos I have my own driver cos I'm a tefler. |

Also cheap beer is way more interesting than cheap cars.
Alas, that doesn't help me either. |

That's because most posters on here seem to live in Istanbul. Why would you want a car in Istanbul? You'd need your head examined. As for Samsun though - don't know what to suggest really. Have you considered rollerblades? |

Calsimsek is the man to ask about cars. |

Ask one of the million or so locals that drive one around the city every day ...
Alternatively, sit on a packed dolmus going nowhere in traffic in 36C next to an old woman who keeps shutting your window ... and consider yourself lucky you've got a seat ...
Yes it might all be part of the experience for a young blood passing through, but do you really think it's the transport of choice for the many that have to use the dolmus and the busses day in day out every day of their life ... |

Sheihk, l think it may be holiday time for you. You seem a lot more bitter and twisted than usual. I think a week on the Med with a few gin and tonics would do you the world of good. |

I don't find the public transportation uncomfortable. I've never owned a car anywhere I have lived (and this includes places where I wasn't a lowly tefler but had a supposedly real job, like in Canada, the UK or South Africa) and have no desire to own one in the future. It just doesnt interest me. I've been stuck in traffic with annoyed and fed up Turkish friends who own cars because they live in Kozyetağı and work in İkitelli and have to commute X hours every day and pay horrific prices for petro and waste their lives in gridlock. I would prefer to live close to my work, or at least within a metro ride or short bus ride or (wishful thinking here) a nice bike ride.
Cars are over rated. Having one doesn't mean your live is any easier or better. It does mean that without one I can afford to buy 4 or 5 international plane tickets every year to escape the chaos. |

I'm with Yaramaz on this one, there are exceptions, but basically seeing one person gridlocked in an over-sized car is something that makes me sick. It shouldn't be allowed. I'm luck to have a fairly enjoyable 1 hour commute to work, but even when I had a twso hour jounrey in the morning, I have an MP3 player, and even enjoy the time out, sat in a traffic jam, enjoying the music. |

I think the only argument in favour of cars in Istanbul is if you have young kids. |

Two things lead me to believe your motive for posting might not actually have been out of a concern for my health ...
Firstly, if I were as bitter and twisted as you are suggesting, do you not think your post would make me more so ...
... and ...
Secondly, Gin has quite a history of dragging the desperate down into the gutter ... have you not come across the Gin Act of 1736 or Hogarth's 'Gin Lane' ... as a bitter and twisted man, I doubt I'd have the moral fortitude of someone like a head teacher at a language school in Istanbul to keep myself on the straight and narrow ...
"Drunk for 1 penny, Dead drunk for tuppence, Straw for nothing!!"
If your concern for my health were genuine, you would have suggested a different tipple entirely ... |

Yaramaz is talking of a short bus ride ... but many bus rides to and from Uskudar or Kadikoy are anything but short ... especially in the morning and evening rush ... in the summer they can be unbearable ...
Depending on my business, I either take a taxi (with AC) or hire a car (with AC) ... as for the benefits of a having a car ... outside the rush hour you can cross from Icerenkoy to Sariyer by car in 25 minutes ... using two busses and the ferry-boat takes almost two hours ... make that a return journey and you've saved 3 hours ... |
