I'd like to get all this set up before I go home to wait for my visa. That way I could wire money straight into my account myself before I move to Japan. I could also have my last paycheck and pension refund from Korea sent directly there rather than paying double exchange rate (won is still pretty decent against the yen).

I realize it might not be possible, but curious.

I needed my foreigner registration card (which required a visa to obtain) to set up my account with Mitsui Sumitomo, and so did my coworkers. I'm not exactly sure what the regulations are, though.

No, you will need a visa.

To open an account, you'll need an alien registration card, or a certificate that says you've applied for one. In order to apply for your alien card, you'll need a valid visa.

While you're home waiting for your visa, get an ATM/Debit card from your bank with a Cirrus logo. When you're in Japan you can withdraw funds from any post office ATM.

That's not one hundred percent correct. I recieved my alien resgistration card without a visa. I still had a tourist visa and it was no probelm. That was six years ago, but I know a couple of friends who recieved their's also with a tourist visa, just a month or so ago.

I did the same - Alien card and bank account set up on a tourist visa. Just had to go and update them when I got my work visa.

Were you given a certain period of time that you had to return showing you had a visa?

But, thanks for correcting what I previously wrote.

Just checked the dates. I had put in my application for a COE, and had the stamp for it, but was still on a tourist visa. I had to come in and update it when I actually got my SHV, because the card was set to expire at the end of the tourist visa.

Now, I may be wrong about this, but I thought you could get an Alien card on a tourist visa anyway, just that it was not necessary. Most places I've checked say that you must apply for one before your 90 days are up, but it doesn't say anything about whether you have to have applied for a different visa first...
