Former education chief alleged to have disparaged teachers
2007-04-14 HKT 18:16
The former permanent secretary for education and manpower Fanny Law is alleged to have said that Hong Kong teachers are stupid. The allegation was made by the vice president of the Hong Kong Institute of Education Bernard Luk. Professor Luk was testifying at the Commission of Inquiry into alleged interference in academic freedom. During cross-examination, Professor Luk said he first met Mrs Law at a function in Canada back in 2002 when she went there as part of an official delegation. Asked for his impression of Mrs Law, he replied that he had been very surprised and shocked. When asked why, he said Mrs Law's first question to him was "Tell me something bad about Hong Kong teachers". Professor Luk said not everything was bad, adding that Hong Kong teachers worked hard. But he alleged that Mrs Law replied that they were also stupid. |
