I may be old and boring but you'd never catch me jetting off into the unknown without making sure I could get a ticket out if everything went t1ts-up.

I dont get it at all.

I cant say if i was good or bad at ESL, but I always did my best. Didint make much money.
couldnt often afford air tickets either.

Does that mean i suck at ESL?
and you dont?

No Mate - I am sure that you are an AWESOME 'native speaker of English'.

Laughing

You didn't make much money, but you seemed to enjoy what you did and were good at it. Nobody put a gun to your head; it was your choice to accept the terms and take on the responsbilities. Did you complain? Did you complain as much as these people who come into ESL bringing little more than the ability to speak their native tongue (most of the time at least), yet expect to be rewarded as though they are highly respected professionals.

How to avoid working for bad schools?

1- Become a fully qualified teacher and apply directly to real schools

2- Work your way up the ESL ladder

Both of these options require time & effort. Maybe that is the problem?

Seems you didn't get very far after your 5 year 'speaking English' career - maybe your story could serve as a warning to native English speakers wishing to live and work overseas?

Good luck with the next 5 years.

so after 5 years of teaching, during which time you would have naturally developed into a better and more experienced teacher than when you started, you are still on the fence about whether you were actually any good or not??

i don't care what anyone says, if you have been teaching for 5 years and at the end of that time you can still say to yourself, " jeeze, i'm still a bad english teacher"..then you have problems.

imagine at a future job interview when a possible employer asks you about this time in your life and you tell them all about your inability to develop into something good.. 5 freakin' years!!!!!

well done guys.
you sure told me!
I have been honest enough with my comments.
I actually had many generous comments and good results with students in ESL teaching.
I eventually worked independantly and made 1 juta per day running my own courses. I also made many incredible relationships. But I still felt that it was not my calling.
Do you condemn anyone who has a TESOL and experience and good intentions?

Success to me means job satisfaction, a decent renumeration and a future. I left to earn more money and fulfill my ambitions and abilities.

perhaps you can qualify your success stories , since you are so good at ESL teaching. do it on another thread.

if you two boys also want to score some golas against me, do it on a personal email, not on this forum. cheers.

Wow.

Vitriol.

Tell you what, every poster on this forum should meet up and duke it out, mano a mano in a TESOL deathmatch.

First, we'd compare bank balances, then we'd have a rapid-fire lesson plan shoot out before moving on to the 'my school could beat up your school' round (bonus points awarded for artistic interpretation).

Or we could just see who can pee higher up the wall. Argument settled.

What's that, Mr Ki-Moon? A job as a UN ambassador? No can do, I'm too busy being a 'real' teacher.

Be-otch.

Spot on Chester. If you haven't noticed the only ones on these threads are the ones complaining about their lives and not doing much to change them.

There's the old saying: 'those that can't teach' but after a couple of years on the ESL Jakarta circuit I'd say that it's more like 'those that can't teach - teach ESL'.

If you're not happy have the damn courage to stand up and try something to better yourself.

Nuff whinging guys. (trolling EF is okay still)

You know what I hate more than anything else? People pointing out the spelling and/or grammar mistakes of other posters.

It doesn't elevate the debate and, in fact, can detract from what other people (illiterate and poorly informed though they may be) have to contribute to this blessed, supportive and non-judgemental forum of which I am privileged to be a member.

Amen.

Oh, wait. . . . .
