Sure, I'm a lifer with six kids. You're a lifer with too many families.

4-0

That is the mark of a true lifer, taking time out to pick out the errors made by other people . I bet your family love you when you go home, criticizing all their mistakes, judging them based on how they speak... come on man, your an English teacher in Japan not the official word on grammar.

You stay on your elementary level feeling so aloof, you have still ignored all the points I have raised which makes me think that you obviously have nothing remotely intelligent to say, so I will say it for you....... good-bye.

I've gone back and forth over my feelings toward Japan, especially regarding racism. To survive here I try to be forgiving. I try to remember that Japan really doesn't have a history of immigrants coming to these shores (although there is a history of Japanese immigration to the USA and to Brazil). Most Japanese have never dealt with anyone who is not Japanese. The racism here is most often based on ignorance. Perhaps I can afford to be forgiving because I am white and I am working as a teacher. I don't experience racism on a daily basis. BUT I am glad there are people who are not so forgiving. I am glad they are speaking out against racism because I know they--unlike most English teachers-- are here for the long haul. They are speaking out against racism because maybe their children will live here forever. I know that many have the attitude that if you don't like it here, you should leave. I just don't know if that's going to solve anything.

Fukuoka is nice as that is where I live BUT in general I think that the Japanese are arrogant, xenophobic, nationalistic, childish idiots who use cultural differences to justify blatant racism and discrimination on a massive scale..

AND yes I am bitter Smile

That is how you introduced yourself to the forum; an intemperate attack on the country that you have made your home for many years. You sound a lot like Edward Seidensticker. Either you have been very naive for a long time or you are some kind of masochist. You then challenged me on the grounds that any criticism of your remarks meant I must be new to the country or Japanese (the last one is particularly interesting as you say in a later post that the Japanese treat foreigners as if they don't understand a particular culture and yet here you are saying that if you are Japanese then you wouldn't understand any criticism made of your comments. If you can't see the irony in that then you are not fit to judge anyone else.)

If you have a problem with the way that the bureacracy works in this country then say what it is. I will almost certainly agree with you. If you have a problem with people laughing at your round eyes then say it. I will almost certainly agree with you. If you have a problem with right-wing elements in this society then say it. I will almost certainly agree with it.

But if you choose to write some disgraceful racist screed against the Japanese then don't count me as one of your allies. What you said before smacks of exactly what you accuse the Japanese of. Childish idiocy!

What say you Bobby?

BUT. I find this blatant and senseless aggression easier to deal with than being denied basic civil rights whilst everyone around you pretends that you do not exist except when they want a free English lesson.

In my wonderful & free white man country, a good percentage of immigrants are locked up for up to five years. And those are often legal immigrants. They used to be called Concentration Camps, but here in Australia, we call them Detention Centres.

I have often thought about Singapore as an alternative, I do like Asia but the exclusion and loneliness that can be inflicted in Japan is hard to deal with, the Japanese can be (intentionally and unintentionally) very cruel. I fear for my kids future growing up in such a country.

Aah, Singapore. Bastion of freedom and...what? Which Singapore are you talking about? I hope your kids like to be caned, that's all I'm saying.

Also on the crime point. Japan has so many seemingly bizarre crimes stemming from repression, collectivism and family relations that border on incest, stalkers, flashers, chopping family members up, stabbings, murders, gang crime and of course inbred corporate coruption on a mountainous scale.

33 people murdered and about 30 seriously injured in the US last week and you're complaining about a man who stabs someone on the street with an umbrella.

It seems easier to class all Japanese as SIMILAR in basic mentality which makes it all the more worrying, yes of course the UK has its nutters but they really do not represent even a small portion of the general population.

Asians all look the same anyway, so they obviously think the same. I mean, Japanese & Chinese & Koreans are basically identical. They're all Asian. They're practically the same country.

What I find endlessly hilarious/terrifying about stereotyping in general is that you're applying the same basic template to 127 million people (in this case). Surely the Oita city salaryman, the Hakodate fishmonger, the part-time farmer from Yamanashi, the retired war vet from Okinawa, the elderly housewife from Nasu, the homeless man who lives in Shinjuku, the hostess who lives in Dotombori, the high school kid from Shimane and the chimpira from Yokohama have all the same values, ideas, goals and so on.[/b]
