Now the weather is getting warmer thinking of a short trip to the Islands for next month. I assume for a beach that's clean enough to swim I need to ditch the Prince's Islands and head to Marmara... Does anyone know of any hotels there that won't break the bank?... or more to the point any hotels there?... I've trawled the net and can't find any?

On Avşa Island there's a hotel called the white house (?) not too bad the sea is clean and the hotel is not in the center which is cr**p. I don't remeber the price range - about 60 to 70 a day half board.

I assume you mean Chios, Lesbos, Samos? They are the islands nearest to us here in Izmir, or has this site become exclusively for Istanbul residents? If so, I would suggest that

Have you considered an inland beach? Iznik has a good lake and is easily accessible from Istanbul. Or there's always Gokceada or Bozcaada?

If you want something close by, try Şile or Kilyos up on the Black Sea. There are public buses going up that way every hour from Uskudar (It takes an hour to get there).

Gkeada and Bozcada are supposed to be lovely. They up around annakale. I think they there may be a fast ferry from Kadikoy or Yenikapı that goes there. I'm not sure if its direct or if you have to change ferries at annakale.

I've never heard of that route via Yenikapi or Kadikoy, but it would be great if so. Bozcaada rocks and I'm planning to head out there again. The last few times I went by bus (yes, bus, Thrifty... there aren't any flights between Cannakkale and that little town where the ferry is...). It's actually a lovely journey- you can either fly to Cannakkale on one of the budget airlines (Pegasus?) or take the bus from Istanbul or Izmir or wherever you are starting out (I've done both angles) and either get a dolmus at Ezine (from the south) or Cannakkale (from the north). Lovely ferry ride from to the island. Lovely beaches once there. I'd live there full time if I could.

I think I'm a big stinky liar Embarassed

Here is a couple of sites about the fast ferries. It looks like it is possible to get ferries to Mamara island and Avşa island. I suppose you could catch a ferry to Mudanya and then take a bus to annnakale for the fun of it.

Actually, it would be better to catch a ferry to Bandırma and then a bus to annakale. That would probably be a lot quicker than taking a bus all the way. However, l don't know if it would be the same price.

I've been swimming on the beach at Buyuk Ada. Seemed clean enough.

Mind you, I am from Liverpool.

I am looking forward to days off and going to Buyukada during the weekdays. Also want to find a bit of surfing somewhere.

Heard the Black Sea is the place to go. Sile or Kilyos. How would you suggest going from the European side? Anyone?

Bus best bet...

There are buses going to Şile and Kilyos from Uskudar on an hourly basis.
I just checked and it is bus 139 from Harem that goes to Şile.

Yep. I came to that conclusion after l had sent my post. However, l've only just got back to the office after helping my friend get rid of a rat in his apartment building. I didn't have enough time to post before l went out on the rat emergency.

There is a tiny airport that small planes fly to from Ist-usually for elderly Aussie and NZ tourists and VIPs-of course it is too expensive for mere TEFLers. The town is Eceabat.

So, thrifty, when I use that airport next time I go to bozcaada, shall I send you the bill, since I can't possibly afford it?

(Why do I keep doing all these things i apparently can't afford and yet still manage to save a tidy sum of money each month???)
