I've just started teaching here in Heredia, Costa Rica, and I've had someone ask me about private lessons. I don't know if I'll do that or not, but could anyone give me an estimate of how much people charge for a private lesson? I also asked on the CR forum, but I wanted to see about in general as well. Thanks!

Depends on where you are and who you teach. In a small city, it was 5 USD an hour, here in Lima, it's between 15 and 20 USD the hour.

I don't think you can compare actual fees from one country to the next, the economies are so different.
But here's how to figure out what to charge. Find out how much schools charge students for a one-on-one lesson. Find out how much those schools pay their teachers to give one-on-one lessons, set your fee right in the middle of those two prices. You will be giving your students a good deal and you will be getting a good deal.

Perfect answer, MELEE.

Here in Ecuador, that makes it around $10 an hour. (Schools charge $11 to $15, Teachers earn $5 to $Cool Also consider who you'll be teaching, though- the economy in most of Latin America is really divided. There are students who can easily afford $20, there are students who would struggle to come up with $5. I frequently teach for free, but won't charge less than $10 an hour.

Best,
Justin

In this city, the average is between $15-$20 per hr.
Oh, but what a drag! I`d still prefer 20 students in a class to one person in a private class.
