I want to check out Venezuela and should be heading over there in the next couple of months to do some teaching. Does anyone know if it's absolutely neccessary to take malaria tablets? I've been teaching in other places in the world but didn't need to take any there. I am worried about side affects (although obviously don't really want to get malaria!). I know you don't need them if you just stick to Caracus/Valencia etc but am planning on visiting more places than there!!
Another thing- is it neccessary to have an outward flight? Cos I don't know how long I'm going to be there. Thanks! |

Can anyone at all answer my previous questions- do I need a return/onward flight when I travel to Venezuela? Do I need malaria medication?
Any help will be very much appreciated! Thankyou. |

Sometimes the side effects of malaria pills are worse than the disease. |

You don't need a return ticket to enter Venezuela. Make sure not to overstay the VISA period.
Malaria pills might be needed when going deep in the Amazon jungle or "Los Llanos". They can be found locally. Consult you physician.

The world health organisation has a good web-resource on communicable diseases. Malaria isn't a problem in most of Venezuela. But for heaven's sake, check with the WHO for this info, not the Dave's-experts! Would you take advice on language teaching from your doctor? I'm a linguist, for crying out loud...
Best,
Justin
PS- The halucinations you can get from taking Lariam are highly over-rated... |

Thanks loads for the replies. Yes you are right I should check it out officially, I suppose I'm just interested in what other people have to say because I've even found in the past that it is reccomended to get various immunisations yet when I go to the doc to get it they say 'you don't really need this or this but you do need this..' I'm not in my home country and I tried talking to the doc here but it was confusing with the language and communication problems!
I had a look and I think I'll be safe without them! Out of interest though if I do decide to go trecking off who knows where, is it easy to get immunisations and anti malarials in South America (in Venezuela especially)??
Thanks! |

The US Center for Disease Control has an excellent page for traveller recommendations:
