Hello All,

I was wondering if I could ask a few questions as to the ESL teaching options in GZ. I have BSc (Hons) in chemistry and will on arrival (with luck) have completed the CELTA. My teaching experience thus far is limited to some tutoring and demonstrating work at Uni.

I will be entering China on an L visa which will need to be changed to Z visa. I am given to understand this will not be a bother to fix and at worst will require a trip to HK. Is this so? If so how long in HK?

I intend to look for work on arrival (early July). What are the prospects at that time of year and more to the point where are the prospects? Private or Public schools?

I will be looking for work there, so is the Internet the best resource or is there some other means?

And finally - How long will all that take, finding job, organising visa etc. I will have accommodation already organised but just thinking how much I should budget for till I can start earning.

So many question, but thanks for your help people.

I have heard conflicting stories as to whether or not it is still possible to do a Hong Kong from Guangzhou to change a visa. I should know more over the next several weeks. Maybe Steppenwolf has a better idea.

You should be researching jobs in Guangzhou now for a July start-date but if you are insisting upon a July start-date, then you may end up working in a language mill.

With a little bit of work on your part, you may or should be able to land a job teaching science in English at either one of the private high schools or one of the universities in the immediate GZ area.

The GZ is excellent but rather competitive and wages tend to be higher than in more other places in China, including Shanghai unless you are doing the International School routine.

There are numerous sites and portals that deal with ESL jobs in Guangzhou .

All the best,

HFG

And in July, you will run into all the third-tier universities and high schools that still need foreign teachers for next year...that has one decided advantage in that last-minute salaries tend to be higher BUT these places can be and usually are quite isolated.

HOWEVER, under current Guangdong rules, they are really encoring the required two-years of prior teaching experience to obtain a foreign expert certificate to work in the public and/or parapublic sector.

First, for GZ, you need TWO YEARS teaching experience on your resume to get a Z visa (newcomer to China).

You can get a 'F' visa with multiple re-entries in HK the same day, about 600 HKD dependent on your passport.

You're looking at coming when most schools are already winding down. Tell you what, though, if you're really looking for something, and you can teach writing/researching, I can set you up with a summer job. PM me.

Cheers!

I'm not sure, but I think my school is looking for a certified Science teacher as well as Math teacher (high school level) - - don't know the details but the pay is sweet. PM me and I'll give you a contact email address. I'm at home so can't ask, but they may have hired already.

By the way, not GZ though- - Suzhou and the job starts in September.

If it helps there is train service between GZ and HK / Shenzhen boarder and it usually takes an hour or less.
