Does anyone know of any reputable summer camps? I might be looking to make some extra money during the summer break. In the past I have received many offers from agents (including a super shady one in Wuhai), but I don't know who to trust. Any of you know of any places that don't rip you off? I don't want to go there to discover that the accommodations are total crap and that they don't pay you at the end. Any input is appreciated. |

Omeida in Yangshuo isn't bad. It's only 3000 for 10 days, but they give you a decent hotel room for free, all meals (and the food is better than average for Chinese school food) and take you on loads of cool trips around the area (which themselves can work out to quite a bit if you do them while visiting Yangshuo independently). Also my wife came with me and, unlike many other Chinese schools, they didn't treat her like crap, and they also invited her on all the trips etc for free. So not amazing pay but you could do worse. At least you know what you're getting. |

Whatever you do, don't work for GlobalTEFL or ChinaTEFL or HelenTEFL or whatever they are calling themselves this year (in Hangzhou) - - you'll regret to your dying day.
On the other hand (speaking of Hangzhou and summer camps), I applied for and was accepted for a different two week camp. The ad states 10 work days (the weekend in between will include some local tour), mornings OR afternoons (I asked to clarify if they meant AND - - they didn't), for 6000 rmb. Sounds pretty cool. That was a month ago, haven't heard from them since, no contract, nuttin'!
But it's okay as I've since decided I simply don't want to work this summer. I've never really had to work summer camps, it's just that the extra moolah is always handy. But I'm going to see a show in Shanghai the weekend of July 7th, then I'll fly home a few days later and stay for almost a month. Still get back in plenty of time to relax in front of the TV before starting all over again in September. |

The very idea of summer camp and "decent" (in terms of what does it do for the learners?) seems to me to be a contradiction!
But then again, you didn't ask that question. |

... you will also be getting the wonderful experience of meeting the Tomato Can. I haven't committed to it yet, but I'll probably be there this summer as well. |

Check out Kenneth's English School in Jilin City, Jilin Province. I worked a winter camp for him this year and was well paid and the kids were great.

Summer camps, ohh boy! If you're young(18-25) I think you'll be able to do it, and maybe even have some fun,but bring lots of Tylenol. |
