Just read this:

Bear in mind you will also be charged commission when you cash the cheques, although it is difficult to predict how much as it varies from country to country and outlet to outlet. In the UK, commission can be as high as 6%.

From here:

Ouch!!

If you're going to the UK then buy the cheques in sterling. Then shop around before you cash them or pay them into the bank.

If you have a bank account, then obviously a bankers draft or telegraphic transfer is the best.

Why didn't you get a bank account? Did you keep your money under the bed?

Traveller's cheques are near-obsolete these days. Only use them if you've no other alternative. Even cash would be preferable to TC's, unless you're going somewhere 'dodgy' and/or staying in hotels or something. But, as you said earlier, there might be restrictions on how much cash you can bring in (or is it out?) of the UK.

I have a bank account here, it's the UK where the problem lies.
It's darn well near impossible to open one from over here, unless someone knows better...

It is easier to open one in an offshore jurisdiction like the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man. Try Nationwide on the IoM.

Setting up an offshore account isn't the easiest thing to do and it won't be an ideal account for you once you're living in the UK.

Don't you have someone in the UK you trust enough to transfer the money into their account? If not, I think US$ cash is your least bad choice. Unless we're talking massive sums here...(you are a tefler aren't you?)

''Blighty'' is a term used by we Brits to refer to the old country. ''Nicker'' is a pound (our money). Surely you knew this?
