Like people in the US, Canada and all over the world, Mexicans come up with some incredible conspiracy theories.

Out of the blue a Mexican lady told me today that the terrible tragedy at Virginia Tech couldn't have been done by the Koreans (the shooter was a Korean national) and that the Americans where behind it to distract the world from George Bush's war in Iraq. (similar theories abounded after 9/11 that the Americans and Jews did it to stir up hatred for the Muslims.)

One student told me that McDonalds grinds up humans and puts their meat in the hamburgers.

Another student told me that the reason Mexico is poor is that the Americans have conspired to make the people here feel inferior.

My favorite gringo urban legend was when Corona was introduced in California. The story goes that the American brewers were so threatened that they started a rumor that Mexicans peed in Corona before they sent it to the US. Hasn't bothered me though. I think, if it's true, it improves the flavor and the alcohol content kills the germs. Razz

These are interesting and entertaining theories if not a bit neurotic and paranoid. Have you guys heard any here better?

Actually, urine is steril. Unless you have a serious illness, there are no germs in urine.

Cool

Mexicans arent the only ones that think Bush is behind everything that happens in the world.... Personally I think these people give Bush way too much "credit" He just aint smart or effective enough to all that is attributed to him.

FWIW, I think Cho's South Korean nationality is a non-issue. He had been in the US legally since he was 9. That makes him American in my book (and Im American if youre wondering). Plus his "rationale" is very much based in a lot of American politics and social bugaboos.

Ditto El Gallo, if the Mexicans are peeing in Corona, let 'em keep doing it. Tho I have to admit Im more of a Leon and Montejo fan myself and they can keep doing whatever they do to those brands too.

There is one little urban legend that I have yet to get to the bottom of, literally.

Several people have told me that unscrupulous brewers of pulque have been known to add human excrement, in a cheesecloth, to the pulque. Apparantly the bacteria that escapes the cloth helps the pulque ferment faster.

One I heard recently. Venezuela is pumping tonnes of cocaine into the Pacific states of Mexico in a bid to fund peasants and foment a Chavez-style revolution. Told to me by a lock-your-doors middle class Mexican.

I've heard the pulque one too. Although cow excrement is used. I must admit, it does have a rather distinctive taste.
