Therapy ? Counselling ? In my opinion it is Amanda and her buddy Dr J who need counselling for posting scurrilously racist remarks. See the "Italy" Forum.

Shame on both of you !

Okay I want to throw my 2 bits worth... Especially since even though I don't like some people's brash attitude (scot47 it seems in this case but there are others), at least they're being honest. There's nothing worse than non-specific unhelpful disinformation... especially if you have to plow through bull-shit to get to it.

As for your MA, it's in English Lit? That's probably slightly more useful but I have a general BA in English (3 year program) and there's no shortage of job offers from Korea... most of which pay about $2000-2500 /mo. That's not bad money especially when you compare to what teachers in Canada make.

Obscene money? With an English degree...?!? Just do what L. R. Hubbard did and start your own religion...

"brash" Me ? Of course I am. The universe is hostile brother. My posts are just preparing those Newbies for the flak they will face once they are out there in enemy territory.

If they can't take a few barbed words on a computer monitor how will they react when they have a contretemps with their manager ?

Reading my posts is a kind of combat training.

Dear scot47,

" Reading my posts is a kind of combat training. "

Ah, you altruistic old devil, you - working your fingers to the bone on that keyboard to help prepare the innocents for the harsh reality of the ESL/EFL battleground. Hmm, you sort of remind me of a Drill Instructor I had a Parris Island - Sgt. Caukins ( You NEVER forget your Drill Instructors names ). He was " brash " to the extreme. In fact, the only big difference I can see between the two of you is that I doubt he was doing it out of altruism. HE actually enjoyed being that way, whereas, as is quite plain to see, it's a sacrifice you make, a mask you wear to hide your empathetic, charitable nature. Bravo, you old softy.
Regards,
John

Dear scot47,
Don't worry - your secret is safe with me. You have been admitted to the Parthenon of crusty but lovable curmudgeons and now take your place beside such other luminaries as Walter Matthau Wallace Beery, Walter Brennan, Wilford Brimley and Gabby Hayes ( in films ) and Mark Twain and Kurt Vonnegut. Oh, by the way ( and entirely off-topic ) here's a site you might enjoy:

http://www.beliefnet.com/story/76/story_7665_1.html

Just to give you a hint of what it entails:

" Even if YOU don't know what faith you are, Belief-O-Matic knows. Answer 20 questions about your concept of God, the afterlife, human nature, and more, and Belief-O-Matic will tell you what religion (if any) you practice...or ought to consider practicing.

Warning: Belief-O-Matic assumes no legal liability for the ultimate fate of your soul. "

Here's how I ( gulp ) did:

" The top score on the list below represents the faith that Belief-O-Matic, in its less than infinite wisdom, thinks most closely matches your beliefs. However, even a score of 100% does not mean that your views are all shared by this faith, or vice versa.

Belief-O-Matic then lists another 26 faiths in order of how much they have in common with your professed beliefs. The higher a faith appears on this list, the more closely it aligns with your thinking.

1. Liberal Quakers (100%)
2. Neo-Pagan (98%)
3. New Age (96%)
4. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (94%)
5. Unitarian Universalism (94%)
6. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (93%)
7. Mahayana Buddhism (90%)
8. New Thought (82%)
9. Taoism (80%)
10. Bah' Faith (73%)
11. Scientology (73%)
12. Theravada Buddhism (71%)
13. Hinduism (69%)
14. Orthodox Quaker (61%)
15. Reform Judaism (57%)
16. Secular Humanism (57%)
17. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (55%)
18. Jainism (53%)
19. Jehovah's Witness (43%)
20. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (41%)
21. Sikhism (40%)
22. Seventh Day Adventist (35%)
23. Orthodox Judaism (29%)
24. Nontheist (28%)
25. Islam (23%)
26. Eastern Orthodox (16%)
27. Roman Catholic (16%)

Which is kind of ironic, seeing as I started out as a No. 27.

Faithfully,
John

Fun test. And thoughful, although this doesn't seem like the sort of thing that one ought to decide on an internet test. Here's me. I'm a member of #1, by the way:

no shortage of job offers from Korea... most of which pay about $2000-2500 /mo. That's not bad money especially when you compare to what teachers in Canada make. (I deleted the quote button here.)........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Really??? I know waitresses in Toronto that earn this much. Teachers have -with a higher salary- full benefits sabbaticals job security etc...Some in Asia build up savings but many more do not. Dodgy employers , insufferable work conditions there are many reasons.

Seems if someone has to post the ? on the internet-Should I teach English overseas??? the answeer is no. And the only obscene thing about the money here is the look of it. A little spat with Scot 47 is nothing compared to what could happen...Like getting off the plane and finding out the contract you signed is a pack of lies.

You see Scot47 is not as bad as some of those REAL bogeymen out there - like school owners in Korea.

Do yourself a favour - do not go to Korea.

Amanda; with an MA in English plus a TEFL certificate,
you shouldn't have any difficulty secuing a position
at a university or college in Korea. The hiring season
is end of the year/ beginning of year.

China is another option. But a word of
advice: an MA means nothing when it
comes to actually teaching TEFL.
A person needs some background in current
ESL methodologies and teaching practices to
be an effective teacher, which is why the
TEFL/CELTA courses are worthwhile for all concerned.

Some of my worst colleagues in Korea were people with MAs in English literature - but NO experience in teaching, no understanding of EFL, and severe cultural shock.

Just an MA in literature is not enough for teaching English overseas. You'll suffer greatly and be setting yourself up for failure and dismay. Get some teaching experience, or a CELTA.
