Hi,
Its my birthday next month, and I'd like to get out of Jakarta for the weekend. Does anyone have suggestions on places to go in WEST JAVA...
I've been to Pelabuan Ratu, Anyer, Bandung, Ciater, Ciwidey etc etc.. but would love to go somewhere different.
Whats in Garut? anything interesting to visit?
We were planning to go to PULAU SEPA in the thousand Islands however I heard that on the weekends this particular island is usually full of koreans...not that I have anything against them. But the person who told me said its usually packed to the max....
We have been to Pantara, and Matahari islands (pulau matahari is the best) but we always try to go somewhere different each trip...
Any suggestions would be most welcome... |

i'd like to recommend pangandaran to you if you haven't been there yet.... still, i would also recommend that its a long weekend that you make the trip. its a 10 hour bus drive so if you have friday off work take the thursday overnight bus--then come back on the sunday night bus... millions(relax beef, there aren't that many) of things to do there and its impossible to spend alot of money there
...did i ever mention the restaurants at the fish market to anyone???? |

Hi Tanya,
How easy is it to get to Pulau Matahari and what are the places to stay like? I'm looking for something to do next weekend...
Sorry I don't have any recommendations apart from those you have mentioned |

I went to Pangandaran on two or three occassions, and I can't say i liked the place at all. Businesses have colluded so that you must pay for two nights, even if you want to only stay one. The local becak drivers get a percentage. This was told to me by an expat who lived there for years.
Sleaze aside, I could see nothing of interest at all.
A lot of expats would make the effort and go further up the coast from Pangandaran and stay at Batu Keras; prices are good and the sea food is great. Leave from the Pangandaran bus terminal and go by mini bus up the coast for an hour to the final village, and then motor bike the last few kms. A great little place, nice swimming, quiet evenings
Has anyone heard if the place has recovered from the Tsunami? |

Hi Fishy...
Its pretty easy to get to Matahari island. Its the only island where you can see both the sunrise and sunset. We didnt get up early enough for the sunrise tho hehehe....
Just go to a local travel agent, and ask them to book you a package to the island. Then about 7.30am you go to Ancol Marina and jump on the boat there. I think it was about 1.5hours trip over to the island. Leaves Ancol about 8.30am ...and returns on Sunday from the island about 1.30pm..
The accomodation was good. Ask for a cottage near the resturant. We were upstairs in number 41 (the closest one to resto). You can have the room upstairs...or one down on ground level.
The snorkelling was good, nice clean blue water and close to the jetty. They have lifeguards watcing over you. I think we got the equipment for the first hour free, but they werent strict about it. They also did diving trips from the island also.
try this link

We went to matahari island maybe about a year ago, then they were closing it for renovations. Im pretty sure its back in operation now. Ask the travel agent.
The package usually consists of transport to and from the island. Breakfast, lunch dinner, and I think a second lunch buffett on the day of departure. Matahari island cost us about 700 thousand per person. Maybe the price has gone up |

guru, with all due respect i will have to disagree with you on this one. theres lots of things to see and do.
1. green canyon-- 15 minute banana boat ride up a river to a cool swimming spot, but crowded on weekends and holidays. weekdays its almost deserted.
2. jungle tours-- my good friend soli takes people deep into the jungle and there is cool stuff to see in there. takes about 4 hours and you get to pick all the "mushrooms" you want.
3. cave swimming-- located behind the kampung just before you enter pangandaran. a massive cave with cold, fresh water running out of it. you can swim about 50-70 meters into it and the walls are all lined with thick vines you can climb up and jump off. outside the cave there is a 5-6 foot waterfall where you can swim behind the falls ...pretty cool
4. turtle island-- maybe the coolest place i've been in indonesia. i have to admit that renting a banana boat to take you there may cost about 500,000( or more) but if you are there with friends and splitting the cost, its not that much....best place to spend a day or two...ruins of an old penetentary and cool remains of an old japanese hide-out used by the soldiers who didn't want to go back to japan after the occupation.
5. the big waterfalls-- at the botom of the falls are a few, naturally carved out of the rock, swimming pools. start a fire, cook some chicken and swim all day. always deserted except for the same old woman i see downstream washing clothes. i owe her a big apology as i have been known to pee in the water quite regularly
6. AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF........ pangandaran is home to the most amazing chicken i have ever seen. located beside the new(ish) market is a chicken that doesn't have any feathers....instead, it is insulated with fur!!! i am not joking...a chicken with fur!!!!!! nobody ever believes me about this until i either show them the pictures i have of it or they go there and see it themselves.
c'mon, who doesn't want to see a furry chicken??..really |

never mind Pang, i'd head to Pel Ratu, 2/3 of the travel time and nice places to stay past Cimaja - a great area and one I miss, even living here in Bali there is nothing that comes close to the terrain and beauty of this part of Java. |

pappy, which part of this basic and straightforward sentence were you unable to comprehend?
" there is nothing that comes close to the terrain(?) and beauty of this part of java."
....me thinks you should make an effort to see more parts of java.....mate
..and please tell us all what makes the "terrain" so mush more spectacular in p-ratu as compared to all the numerous other places i am sure you have been to on java....mate
i ask this because you have already told us that you spent every weekend in p-ratu so i question when you found the time to look around java....mate
" a great area and one i miss"
it is a great area, there is no doubting that. i also don't doubt that you miss it....BUT THAT ENTIRE TOWN STILL HATES YOU. most have forgotten your name but they love telling the story of the bule who broke the surfboard and then refused to pay to have it fixed...you really pissed alot of people off there...you might miss it but they don't miss you...mate
mmmm, smells like gado-gado. that reminds me, say hi to laurel for me......mate
well "J", looking forward to your reply...mate |

Yes, but you don't deny breaking some poor guys board then not manning up and paying for it.
IF that is the case.....and this isnt trial by internet......shame on you. What's minimum wage in ur country and how much did the board cost? |

Let's set the record straight once and for all.
Seeing as you are all so interested in the case of the broken board it goes as follows.
1. Beefer has no idea what he is talking about.
2. The board in question didn't belong to a local, it belongs (note use of present tense) to an expatriate bule.
We actually came to an agreement that I would pay a sum towards replacement value, which was paid in full.
3. The most interesting part of this long forgotten saga is that I wasn't neccessarily responsible for the damage to the board, there were multiple people who could have caused the breakage.
Did any of the others cough up? Only under duress, so 'K' - drop the holier than thou attitude, you're only making yourself sound like a dick.
Btw - I'm still laughing, Sid, if you want to contact the owner of the board to verify the facts then pm me and i'll happily provide his email and phone number..
Somehow I doubt that you'll bother but the offer's still there...
Cheers mate. |

.tanya comes on here and very clearly states that she has already been to p-ratu and wants to go someplace different for her b-day trip.......simple enough ..some ideas are given..................then paps comes on here and in all his wisdom he suggests to her (drum roll please)...........

what were you thinking here??...do tell
also, you shouldn't mislead readers here by saying that you were fed up with pondok indah and left. in reality you were fired. its all on record in your work history report...along with all the complaints you recieved while you were there.
this all leads to what i perceive as a major piece of comedy......
you previously mentioned that your vein stabbing co-worker, with all his hardcore drug use was able to maintain his position at the school, but you, the experienced "teacher" with (i'll presume) little to no drug habit cannot hold a job there. sure, you were likely unhappy there and you would be well within your rights to feel this way......but don't you find it amusing that you were unable to hold your job there but the drug addict was.
sure, it doesn't cast the school in a good light either but i'm sure you can see the comedy in your situation there.
two more things...you stated on another thread that you KNEW( i don't why you capitalized the word) who i was ...... this is also not true...i'm not kester.
also, i do know what i'm talking/ typing about. your work history and reputation in this city in legendary. your run-ins with managment and co-workers is well documented.
...well, enough of that.
tanya, what kind of things do you like to do on your holidays. further details could lead to better suggestions.....or atleast suggestions for places you haven't already been to. |

Thanks for that !!
No matter what the topics are on this forum, they always go off track !!!
I havent been to Garut or Pangandaran ...but I think Pangandaran is a bit far for only 2 days off I do plan to get there one day...and have heard so much about "green canyon"
We are interested in the natural things around...mountains, beaches, etc.
Has anyone ventured to any waterfalls in West Java? Ones that arent too difficult to reach
We dont really want to visit Bandung, espesically on weekeends when half of Jakarta is there also. It just sounds too stressful
What about suggestions of villas or hotels to stay in the Puncak area. I've been to puncak heaps of times, but never stayed over night. Too many hotels to choose from
Can anyone recommend some places to stay. We would love something with a nice view, and a nice balcony to sit out on and just do nothing... watch the world go by
Im interested in the "real Indonesia" not shopping malls, etc etc....
I like Jakarta but its always good to get away, and get a couple days of fresh air |

in the meantime, i'm sure paps can fill you in on some great ideas about going to places you've already been to....
till tomorrow...

one thing that anybody who has ever been to puncak knows is that prices vary greatly-- from beyond posh to piss poor.
i would recommend "Evergreen". one bedroom villas go for about 250.000 on weekdays and 300,000-350.000 on the weekends. but they have villas of all sizes going up to 6-7 bedrooms, so if you and your friends go splits on one of these its a whole lot cheaper. plus, most of the larger villas are higher up on the side of the mountain so you can get that good view you were looking for. A small secret to evergreen is that if you go to the office and none of the villas available are what you were looking for, go ot the security guards at the gate and ask if they can help you. they are connected to the people who own their own villas on the property and will rent them out to you if the owner is not there. these tend to be smaller but are at the top of the hill and look down upon all the other properties.
still, as i am sure you are already aware, you would probably be better off driving around for a bit and seeing what else is available. you might find a better deal but you will have to get there early as puncak fills up by sat. afternoon and the prices start to skyrocket as well.
waterfall???
well, there is a nice one in taman safari......all the way at the back of it. you will have to pay the entrance fee to the park and then walk (after travelling through the wildlife park) to the very back of it..past the wild west show...past everything, just keep on going...its not overly spectacular but.....it is a waterfall.
in closing, i would suggest negotiating with the villas that are located on the road leading to taman safari. the views are great from this location and the villas are quite large plus, you are off the main road so your nights would be quieter. also, bring socks, you'll find that the mornings are very cool and this leads to cold tile floors.
what sort of price range were you and your friends ( i assume you are going with friends) thinking about paying for accom. while there?
i'm sure there are numerous others on this forum who have stayed in puncak so they should be able to list off a few good places as well. |
