What are your largest classes and smallest classes? Just curious.

I'm under the impression classes in Vietnam are quite large and the odds of finding schools with small class sizes are difficult to come by. I have no idea actually.

It all depends on the school that you work for. Even at same school it will vary from class to class. It all depends on enrollment and how successful and well known the school is. And if you're attractive and very popular teacher, more students will ask to be in your class.

I've taught class sizes from 1 to 35.

I'm worried about whether my experience teaching SMALL ( < 8 students ) classes in Japan is adequate preparation for teaching VN's relatively large classes.

In your experience, how different is the teaching style in a large class?

(Also, in a large class, do you usually have a local person to assist with translating and crowd-control?)

Not to worry. Generally, Vietnamese students are very nice and disciplined.

I've had both adult and children classes.

You will not have control and discipline issues with adult or mixed (adult w/ teenagers) classes.

In my past experience, in children's classes, you will have Vietnamese TA who will be there to assist you and maintain order in the classroom.

I'm not only concerned about the discipline problem... there's the matter of activities, voice level, yada yada yada... I'm afraid that many of the learning-games etc. won't work well with large groups.

Nice to hear that there's a local present, to assist with crowd control. That's SO valuable.

In Japan, I spent one year teaching 18 toddlers ( <4 yrs old) at a time-- it was so easy to do, because the mothers attended as well, and became assistant teachers.

There's also the inevitable kid who wants to get attention, or needs special handling... so YEAH! GOod news, there, thanks! An omnipresent co-teacher will be a godsend.
