I had to sign year leases in my apartments because the landlords are so cut-throat here, most don't allow for affordable 6-monthers. I also just have some friends here, mostly Chinese, that are nice.
The working situation here is absolutely wretched. I cannot stress it enough. There was a recent problem with the training center that I USED TO work for, glad I don't anymore, in which they just decideded not to pay a bunch of the foreign teachers. Why, who knows. I recall being told once that I was only working 18 hours instead of 20 and they were going to cut my "housing allowance" (which they did away with later to "cut cost" anyway).
They use you here. You are not a person, just a tool to get them cash. Most places in China are like that but here you can see it much more clearly and they don't try to hide anything. You will often be told you are a "bad teacher" if you don't do exactly what they say or challenge them.
And, I've had to stiff-arm a few bosses in my time here to get the money I deserved....
