True story: After four days of scandalous debauchery in Jakarta I met a great girl. She actually lives right next to me in Kuala Lumpur. I could walk to her house in about 15 minutes. She has never asked for a penny from me.

I get 10million a month... at a lanugage centre in Jakarta.

I do not have any special teaching qualifcations. (no certificates)

2.4million a month for my accomodation...

1 million per month for my transport (taxi to and from office 40 thousand per day)

I do not drink or smoke. So thats saving money there...

My grocery shopping is usually about 300 thousand for about 10 days... (i live with my partner so shopping for 2)

Other money is for miscellaneous things..maybe a day trip to Anyer or Bandung... but thats not every month....

Every month I have about 3 or 4 million left in my account...

I put that over to another account I dont touch...so thats building up nicely...

Jakarta is as expensive as you want it to be.

I was on 7.5 a month, and living in school accommodation, so my budget was about 250,000 a day.

If it was a day where I walked to school, had two meals from the food carts and bought a pack or two of cigarettes, 50,000 would be plenty. Maybe even enough left over for a DVD or two.

But if I took my girlfriend to dinner at Chillies, then we had a few pints at Hard Rock Cafe, a few games of ten-pin bowling at Plaza Indonesia, and then wound up the evening with an hour or two of pool and drinks at Q billiards, then I would have just spent about five day's salary in a few hours.

Which is why it's such a cliche to find teachers in and around Jaksa and a few other cheap places.

It's also a reason that most teachers tend to hang out with other white folk, because if they go out with locals, they're not only expected to pay, they're expected to pay at some expensive joint because the locals would never be seen dead in Jaksa.

What's up with that weird area in Kemang that has about twenty pubs and nothing else? It's like a movie set. And some of the pubs don't serve alcohol.

I lived with a guy who only left the house to teach. He didn't drink or smoke and wouldn't go outside at night. He saved around 5 million a month. Which is fine... but why bother when he could have lived like that at his parents' place in a country where he earned real money and saved a hell of a lot more each month? He could have used that money to come to Indonesia for a holiday, during which he might have actually seen some of it.

Saving money while working in Indonesia seems like a waste of time to me. It makes a lot more sense to save it at home and then spend it in Indonesia.

Like, I could buy one pack of cigarettes in Australia... or ten in Indonesia.
I could have one drunken night of debauchery in a club here... or six nights getting just as drunk in Jaksa.
I could buy one T-shirt here... or 5-10 there.
One TV here... or 4 there.
One hour with a hooker here... or someone to do my laundry and clean my house for a year there.

Sure, if I really lived on the cheap in Indonesia I could probably save a couple of million a month, and at the end of the year I would have saved around the same amount I could have saved up at home with a decent full-time job and a spartan lifestyle in a couple of months. Then I could bring that money home and... do what with it? Most of it would be gone by the time I've paid the bond and first month's rent on a small flat. Not my idea of a year well-spent. Still, each to their own.

Regarding wages, I have been offered a two year contract in Bandung
for US $22,300 per annum (210 days). This includes full housing, return
ticket, etc. Is this a fair enough remuneration do you think? Please respond
if you have an opinion and you live and work in Indonesia or in Bandung.
Thanks. Sheikhdown

Sounds about right for a national plus school - if that is the type of employer. It would be very good for a language school, but below par for an international school.

really? you think this is about average for a national plus school? i disagree. i think it is an exceptional wage for bandung and probably an international school. although they probably exist, i have never heard of a national plus school paying a dollar salary. i know that the 3 main language schools in bandung pay between 6-8 million per month.

22,300/year=1860/ month @ 9100= almost 17million rupiah per month. very nice salary for bandung. and if other benefits are included........ very good job indeed. there arent many international schools in bandung and i dont know how many national plus schools because i havent lived there for a couple of years. the japanese international school only hires 1 part time bule to teach english. i dont have any idea about nataional plus schools in bandung, but schools in bandung generally pay less than those in jakarta because the cost of living is less.

in jakarta, most ef schools pay between 6 million (kalimalang and others) to the high at ef pondok indah, just over 9 million. some include housing and others dont. the average seems to be around 8 million. shines and direct english pay a couple hundred rupiah more per month. eec in kelapa gading pays between 9 and 10 million. tbi kelapa gading pays about 10.5 and the tbi near tamarin pays about 12-13 million without housing. these figures are not exact but pretty close. at least they are the salaries of my friends that work at these places.

the majority of national plus schools in jakarta generally pay 8-14 million with varying benefits. there are some schools such as pelita harapan which pay substancially more. as far as i know all these school pay in rupiah.

ghandi international school pays between 1300-1700/month with overtime available. SIS generally 1500 but can nego. Singapore PSB starts at 16 million per month but can nego based on education and experience. japanese international school pays 2000 per month. korean school starts 1500 to 2200 depending on qualifications, but no other benefits. AIS about 30,000/year but can be higher depending on experience. i think the german school pays about 3000 a month plus housing and other benefits but i could be wrong. NJIS about 30,000 plus housing, car allowance, bonus salary and airfare. some schools provide a lot more benefits, depending whether the person was hired locally or from overseas.

alot of national plus and international schools are now employing nationals from singapore, malaysia, phillipines, india, and pakistan. generally these people are paid salaries between 7-1000 dollars. they advertise as having expat teacher..........not native speaker teachers. seems most indonesia either dont care or understand the distincition. many language schools are hiring non native speakers and at least one has a phillipino DOS.

if anyone has additonal info, please post it.

bandung is generally cheap to live and that salary should be more than adequet.
good luck with the job

Oh yes they do! As science or maths teachers parents will accept Indians and Fillipinos quite readily - but you just try replacing a (truly white) native speaker with an 'expatriate' as an English teacher. Cheapo third rate natplus schools do it, but others have tried this at their peril. I replaced an Indian whose contract was not renewed following parental revolt.
