hmmmm I think the OP was asking about EF summer camps. Any experience with those?
Yet another thread has been derailed by those who have a thorn in their side regarding the EF chain? Just like any other franchise, pretty hit and miss in my view.
Summer camps are quite often organised at other schools\institutions with the 'schools' blessing and/or legal foreign teachers. |

for one who's got no EF experience that's a rather interestin' appoach there
no "thorns in sides" give clearer visions
foreing franchises bring their foreign products as well as foreign management techniques and in some instances they also bring their foreign workers....with respect to educations they bring their teachers....now, with EF they bring hopes of some foreign management techniques in the process of carrying out the product, however and you know what i might say there let's call it false expectations
EF English First is a corrupt organization that does not deserve any attention of FTs....this MacChain has been completely taken over by Chinese who have their own goals...sadly enough that very same story goes for this MacChain in other countries around the world
peace to the ones with their thornless visions as well as goals whether it is in their careers or on our forums
and
cheers and beers to all hard working FTs around the world that care |

I stand corrected englishgibson. I did mention previously that with all the bad press out there regarding EF (from those who have hands-on experience) that it's not advisable taking on any job offer from them, especially considering all the info available to newbies.
They must be sweatin' are they even aware of what has been written about them here, I wonder...
Another thing to consider is that coming over here for a summer camp ie not already legally employed would make me nervous. What kind of work status can they provide, that would be my main concern.
I'm doing summer camp but that's only for 12 days, you can't get a visa for that.
Something just occured to me.. there are summer camps\winter camps in various cities that I know of organised by the education bureau, that take place at a hotel. Would you need the same documentaion you would need working at a school.
hmmm correct me if I'm wrong, didn't the OP say he was coming over for summer camp from the U.S? without an on-going job offer i.e after summer camp with EF, what's the plan?[/quote] |

When I was EF Huizhou's Director of Studies, they did this peculiar Summer Camp with all kinds of support staff that was not even from EF. They hired (went behind my back) some "unpro" teachers from "anywhere in the world" and put one of my regular teachers in charge there. Well, he was not the only one in charge.
By the way, that camp was in a public school at the outskirts of Huizhou.

they'd close you in the school
well, with respect to chinese summer camps, you might not be "a teacher" coming for that 12-30 days
Peace to Summer Camps and their purpose
and
cheers and beers to China |

What do you mean 'they'd close you in the school'?
My concern is my contract finishes at the end of june, my papers at the end of july.
Probably have a job secured for next semester, what about the interim?
The time in-between i.e between july and september are not good times to be in limbo.
I'll have enough money to get through this period but the visa issue worries me. It's all too easy to sometimes stay on at a school that you may not be completely satisfied with, because they can take care of it.
That would be an easy option but 800 students..come on. |

First, James, your initial posting showing such strong support for EF shocked me. It was like you were in the middle of a big fire and could only see the match that caused it. Your second posting, however, in response to EnglishGibson, whose postings on this topic are very a per pos, was much more moderate and leads me to believe that you actually understand the danger of dancing with these wolves.
Next, regarding your own visa issue, it belong in a separate thread. If the other posters, however, will indulge me, this is the usual process :
1. Land a job for next August / September.
2 Sign the contract with the school.
3. Ask the new school to cover your visa one month early and one month late. Any reputable school will or should do that with no problem. It's how things usually work in China.
4. Look for a reputable school that runs a summer camp and then you can make money during that period; or
5. Find a school that pays 12 / 12 months, as I have, so you have no worries at all (and no, it's NOT a language mill).
Otherwise, put up a separate thread and I am sure that the veterans around here will offer you good advice.
All the best,
HFG
BTW, Are you the "James" at Xuzhou Normal University? |

wow thanks for all your comments.
I just thought that a 2 month summer school contract with EF may have been a way to dip my toe into china before commiting to the move over there long term. I figured EF may be the way to go as its a big organisation and they do all the paperwork for you.
I just wanted to hear some comments from people who have worked for EF and had a positive experience as i can't believe that an organisation that is slated so much could actually survive unless they have a high turnover of staff or rely on newbies/ gap year students?!.
I think i might stick to Spain |
