Hi everyone,
I have gotten so much info reading the posts in this forum-thanks! I am considering going to La Serena/Coquimbo with English Open Doors. Does anyone know about the demand for English in those areas? If I go, I hope to supplement my income giving lessons/tutoring outside of the school I will be working in.
Also any info regarding English Open Doors would be super helpful. I don't know much about the program. Since my Spanish is not great, I thought it would be the best way to go for the next six months or so.
Thanks again,
~Ally |

i doubt there's a huge demand for english in la serena but i also doubt you'll have much competition from other native speakers so you'll probably pick up some private students without a problem. cruise ships are starting to call in at coquimbo (i believe) so there'll be demand for english speakers working in tourism in the area. there isn't a great deal to do in either place but the countryside is great and la serena is quite a cool place-it's got a great beach and the city centre is really nice as well. it also has a huge mall and a Jumbo supermarket which is useful. |

Yeah I imagine La Serena can be a quiet little place. If there isn't much demand for English that's great for me. I want to be as immersed in Spanish outside of the school.

Hi Ally J
I will be going to Chile through EOD in June. So far it seems like there is several people going from the U.S. I hear that they try to place a least a few volunteers in each community so that we are not the only foreigners. I don't personally know anyone that is participating, but it would be cool if all of us from this forum kept in contact while abroad.
Good luck. |

I agree! It would be good to share stories and laughs! Also, support if needed. I will check the forum when I can but you can always leave me a message too. |
